We are seeking an experienced Claims Adjuster to join our team and oversee the investigation, evaluation, and resolution of cargo and transportation-related claims while ensuring compliance with industry regulations and company policies.

Summary

The Claims Adjuster is responsible for managing freight and cargo claims from initial notification through final resolution. This role requires excellent investigative, analytical, negotiation, and communication skills, along with a strong understanding of transportation regulations, carrier liability, and claims management.

Responsibilities

  • Manage cargo, freight damage, shortage, loss, and delay claims from receipt to resolution.
  • Investigate claims by reviewing Bills of Lading, Proofs of Delivery, driver statements, photographs, inspection reports, invoices, and supporting documentation.
  • Determine carrier liability in accordance with applicable legislation, contracts, tariffs, and insurance requirements.
  • Communicate professionally with customers, carriers, insurance representatives, legal counsel, and internal departments.
  • Negotiate fair and timely claim settlements while protecting the company's financial interests.
  • Prepare detailed claim summaries and recommendations for management.
  • Coordinate inspections and obtain estimates when required.
  • Maintain complete and accurate electronic claim files.
  • Monitor claim deadlines and ensure compliance with statutory limitation periods.
  • Identify claim trends and recommend operational improvements to reduce future losses.
  • Assist with subrogation and recovery efforts when applicable.
  • Support internal departments with questions regarding claims prevention and documentation requirements.
  • Ensure all claims are handled in accordance with company policies and industry best practices.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of experience adjusting transportation, trucking, cargo, freight, or logistics claims.
  • Strong knowledge of cargo liability, freight claims, and transportation documentation.
  • Excellent investigative and analytical abilities.
  • Strong negotiation and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • High attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple claims simultaneously while meeting deadlines.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel, Outlook, and Word.

Preferred:

  • Experience working for a trucking company, freight broker, or transportation insurer.
  • Knowledge of Canadian and U.S. transportation regulations.
  • Experience working with Transportation Management Systems (TMS) and claims management software.
  • CIP, FCIP, or other insurance/claims designations are considered an asset.
