Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Supervisor, Education & Visitor Engagement, the Historical Interpreter is part of a team that is responsible for the research, planning, preparation and provision of museum events and educational programming. The Historical Interpreter performs duties in accordance with the established procedures and policies of the County of Simcoe and applicable legislation.

** Anticipated length of contract - 1 year **

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (not listed in order of priority)

1. Present education and interpretation programs for the Simcoe County Museum, according to program guidelines.

2. Assist with Museum special events.

3. Represent the Simcoe County Museum and travel to various local community events to conduct educational and event programming.

4. Conduct set up and clean up materials and supplies for programs and events.

5. Deliver educational outreach programs to diverse audiences.

6. Under the supervision of the Supervisor, Education & Visitor Engagement, design, develop and deliver education programs, outreach programming and day camps.

7. Conduct historical research to enhance museum programming and exhibits.

8. Wear appropriate and approved historical costumes relevant to specific programs.

9. Conduct guided tours and provide detailed interpretation about historical time periods, artifacts, and buildings.

10. Participate in various types of media (e.g., photographs or videos) to represent the Simcoe County Museum for marketing purposes.

11. Utilize and reconcile County purchasing card and create/receive purchase orders using approved system.

12. Provide front desk and reception coverage as scheduled.

13. Perform other duties as assigned, including redeployment in emergency situations.

14. Comply with provincial and County occupational health and safety legislation, regulations, policies and procedures.

15. Maintain confidentiality in accordance with the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

EDUCATION, TECHNICAL SKILLS AND CERTIFICATION

  • One year post-secondary education in a discipline related to the museum field. This job may be considered for educational equivalency in accordance with County Policy.
  • Completion of an O.M.A. certificate in museum studies program would be considered an asset.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work well with internal and external contacts.
  • Ability to act independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
  • Knowledge in historical techniques or trades such as blacksmithing, leatherwork, use of historical farm tools, fiber arts, and period-specific clothing would be an asset.
  • Ability to complete multiple tasks within tight deadlines.
  • Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening.
  • Valid G class drivers license and access to reliable vehicle.

EXPERIENCE

  • One (1) year working directly with children in a leadership capacity, in a museum or public setting.
  • Experience in developing and executing educational programs for multiple educational levels.

EFFORT

  • Physical effort is required during set-up, delivery, and clean-up of programs and special events.
  • Ability to accomplish physical effort in allotted time.
  • Visual and mental effort required when conducting research and planning education programs.
  • Extended periods of walking and standing.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Exposure to inclement weather, dust, dirt, open flame, smoke, fumes and/or gases related to museum education and event programming.
  • Ability to complete tasks with numerous interruptions.
  • Flexibility to work weekends, weeknights, holidays, and special events.
