Competition: SS -26-27-033 Braillist (Interpreter)


St. Albert Public Schools is currently recruiting a Full Time, Probationary, Braillist (Interpreter) for a work assignment with Student Services.



St. Albert Public Schools is seeking a detail-oriented Braillist to join École Hillgrove School. In this role, you will work closely with the Elementary teachers, students, and family to support a visually impaired student. You will transcribe daily learning materials and support the student's independence and participation in the classroom. Please be advised, this is the initial assignment. Based on student and/or division needs, the assignment and division location may change.



Hours of Work: 32.5 hrs. /week; 6.5 hrs. /day; Monday-Friday; Full Time Probationary

Hourly Rate: $31.89 per hour, effective September 1, 2026, as per the CUPE Collective Agreement


Important note: If you are interested in this role but do not meet the
requirements, we are willing to provide training at a lower classification. Upon completion of the training, the successful candidate would then transition to the Interpreter classification.


Specific Needs/Requirements for this position:

  • UEB interpreter training through CNIB is required
  • Minimal level of uncontracted Braille; contracted Braille preferred with basic technical skills
  • Familiarity with Braille 2000 program
  • Foundational knowledge may be supported through professional training
  • Experience providing interpreter and educational support to an academic student is beneficial
  • Experience working as an interpreter using Braille in an elementary and/or early childhood school setting
  • Experience providing support in a variety of settings for students with visual impairments in social contexts with their peers
  • Experience in supporting the classroom teacher with programming modifications or adaptations as needed
  • Experience delivering interventions and strategies as laid out by the classroom teacher and other transdisciplinary team members
  • Experience working with Teachers of Visually Impaired (TVI) and specialists in providing supports for students in a regular classroom setting
  • Use a total communication approach with students including oral communication, Braille, and assisted technology
  • Knowledgeable in using strategies that enhance communication in a classroom setting, field trips and unstructured parts of the school day
  • Experience in working with assistive technologies in the classroom

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Some post-secondary education is preferred
  • Courses, seminars, and specialized training related to child development is an asset
  • Other skills and abilities applicable to supporting students in an educational setting are an asset
