Position Title: Philanthropy Intern
Division: Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation
Date: September 2026
Purpose of Position:
The Philanthropy Intern will provide support to the Development Team in the implementation, administration, and evaluation of all fundraising activities for the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund (NOHFC).
The Intern reports to the Senior Director, Philanthropy but also takes functional direction from the Legacy Giving Manager, and the Special Events Team.
The Philanthropy Intern position directly supports the development of a skilled workforce in the specialized field of fundraising and nonprofit development—an area experiencing growing demand across Northern Ontario.
This position addresses that gap by providing structured, hands-on training in key areas of philanthropy, including annual giving, legacy giving, major gifts, donor stewardship, database management, and community engagement. The intern will gain practical experience using industry tools and best practices, while being mentored by experienced fundraising professionals.
The internship helps strengthen the talent pipeline in Northern Ontario and increases the likelihood that emerging professionals will remain in the region. In turn, this supports the long-term sustainability of the nonprofit and healthcare sectors, which rely heavily on skilled fundraising professionals to support critical programs and services
Responsibilities:
This position requires strong administrative and communication skills. The Intern is responsible for assisting in fundraising activities that support the Foundation. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Support the team through prospect research, donor briefing preparation, and pipeline tracking assistance
- Assist with donor stewardship activities, including drafting personalized thank-you letters, impact updates, and stewardship reports
- Assist with special events (signature & community) activities
- Contribute to donor recognition activities, including recognition listings, naming opportunity tracking, and acknowledgment coordination
- Provide administrative support for Legacy Giving and Major Gifts initiatives, including maintaining records, assisting with estate gift documentation, and supporting donor engagement materials
- Assist with Annual Giving activities, including campaign segmentation support, donor communications, and response tracking
- Conduct research on prospective donors, including capacity and affinity indicators, to support fundraising strategies
- Support the preparation of donor profiles, meeting briefs, and presentation materials for fundraising staff and leadership
- Assist in maintaining accurate donor data within the CRM system to ensure effective relationship management and reporting
- Participate in donor engagement planning discussions and support follow-up actions arising from meetings and cultivation activities
Ideal Knowledge, Skills, Experience:
- Above average communicator – both written and orally. This position also demands knowledge of and sensitivity to patients and their families, donors, recognition programs, and superior interpersonal skills.
- Ability to provide appropriate stewardship to various constituencies including but not limited to donors, volunteers and community members.
- Maintains a customer service focus in all interactions with Foundation constituencies including, donors, volunteers, board members, patients and Health Sciences Centre staff.
- Experience or understanding of donor stewardship and fundraising principles
- Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
- Ability to learn new programs.
- Experience with Raiser's Edge is an asset
- Proactive with excellent project management skills and proven ability to handle multiple assignments and set priorities, in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships; demonstrable success working effectively on cross-functional teams.
Qualifications:
The Philanthropy Intern will have completed some form of post-secondary education, preferably in one of the following areas:
Marketing, Business, Fundraising, Office Administration
Experience in sales & customer services, marketing and presentation planning is also an asset.
Other Information:
- Salary: $20 an hour
- Work hours: 9AM – 5PM, Monday through Friday. Some after-hours required.
- This position will have a 6 month probationary period
- Workplace is a physical location inside the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre
- Police Criminal Record Check upon hire is required
- Successful candidate must show proof of double COVID-19 vaccination. Must also provide up to date immunizations
- Candidate must have a valid drivers license and access to a reliable vehicle
- Candidate must complete all required TBRHSC onboarding and orientation documentation
NOHFC Requirements:
- The Philanthropy Intern is a 1-year NOFHC Internship.
- Candidate must be a new entrant into the workforce, are transitioning to a new career, or the unemployed or underemployed who are entering a new field.
- Candidate must have not previously participated in an NOHFC funded internship in the 2020 Mandate.
- Candidate must be 18 years of age or older.
- Candidate must be legally eligible to work in Canada.
- Once hired, the candidate must reside in the Northern Ontario community in which they are employed.
- Candidates must be graduates of post-secondary degree or diploma programs.
- The position must provide the candidate with first time employment in their field of study.
- Candidates are only eligible to participate in the internship program one time.
