The Role:


Rakuten Kobo Inc. is looking for a Software Engineer Co-op to join our Research and Development International team as a co-op for 8 months starting in September 2026. The team is comprised of many highly talented enthusiastic individuals who ensure the services and offerings from Kobo are available to both internal and external customers.


Reporting to the Principal Engineer, the Software Engineer Co-op will work with the Research and Development International team made up of developers and testers and take an active part in delivering high quality software to Rakuten Kobo’s users.


The Person:

  • A passion for software development and delivery
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Have a desire to work in a team but also be self-organising enough to be able to work on a task independently
  • Constantly learning and self-improving mindset

The Skillset:

Required:

  • Some previous experience in and Object-Oriented Software Language such as C# or Java
  • An understanding of T-SQL Databases
  • Experience with web technologies (HTML, JavaScript, CSS)
  • Some knowledge/experience with modern UI frameworks e.g. Angular, React, NextJS
  • Knowledge of SDLC
  • Writing and Maintaining Source Code
  • Understanding of the Testing Pyramid
  • Agile methodologies
  • CI/CD Pipeline – Jenkins, GitHub Actions, CircleCI etc.
  • Familiarity with one IDE (VS Code, JetBrains Rider)

Nice to haves:

  • An understanding of server-side web technologies such as Web API and MVC
  • Knowledge of using version control systems such as Git.
  • Experience using an ORM framework (NHibernate, Entity Framework)
