Alberta Health Services (AHS) offers alternative career opportunities for International Medical Graduates (IMGs) who are not able to obtain independent licensure on their own and/or are unable to obtain a residency position. Associate Physicians are valued members of the collaborative care team at AHS, functioning as mid-level providers under the supervision and direction of physician supervisor(s) to provide acute care coverage within our hospitals and make a difference in the lives of our patients and their families. Associate Physicians are registered for supervised practice with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) under the Limited Practice Registry and provide clinical support under the direction of AHS Medical Staff. In this position, you will deliver inpatient care at the South Health Campus (SHC) in Calgary as a member of the Respirology service, working within a multidisciplinary team under the supervision of the attending respirologists. This is a daytime position consisting of 10-hour shifts, Monday to Friday.

Description:

You will work alongside respirologists, nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, physiotherapists, dietitians and social workers in the care of hospitalized patients with acute and chronic respiratory disease, including COPD and asthma exacerbations, pneumonia, interstitial lung disease, pleural disease, pulmonary embolism, thoracic malignancy and hypercapnic respiratory failure, including patients on non-invasive ventilation. Job duties include assessing new admissions and patients transferred to the service; documenting the history and conducting a complete physical examination; daily rounding and reassessment of patients; developing and adjusting treatment plans in consultation with the attending/supervising respirologist; writing appropriate orders and entering orders, progress notes and discharge summaries in the Connect Care (Epic) electronic health record; reviewing laboratory, imaging and pulmonary function results; communicating with patients, families and consulting services; and participating in discharge planning, care transitions and handover to the on-call team. Applicants with prior experience in internal medicine, respirology or acute inpatient care, and strong communication and teamwork skills, are preferred.
