Full job description

The Downsview Group is seeking an experienced Landscape Construction Lead Hand to oversee and coordinate multiple landscape construction crews and ensure projects run smoothly, efficiently, safely, and on schedule.

The ideal candidate will have extensive landscape construction knowledge, strong leadership skills, and the ability to manage multiple crews and active job sites. This position requires someone who can plan ahead, anticipate job requirements, solve problems in the field, and take ownership of keeping projects moving.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee, coordinate, and provide direction to multiple landscape construction crews
  • Monitor progress across multiple active job sites
  • Ensure project schedules, deadlines, and production targets are met
  • Plan ahead for labour, materials, equipment, tools, and deliveries to minimize delays and downtime
  • Read and interpret landscape plans, construction drawings, elevations, grades, details, and specifications
  • Ensure crews understand project scope, priorities, and daily expectations
  • Delegate work and coordinate manpower between projects
  • Monitor workmanship and ensure work meets drawings, specifications, and The Downsview Group's quality standards
  • Identify and resolve site issues before they impact schedules or productivity
  • Coordinate with Project Managers, Foremen, other trades, suppliers, and site representatives as required
  • Monitor crew productivity and ensure labour, materials, and equipment are being used efficiently
  • Maintain organized, clean, professional, and safe job sites
  • Enforce company policies and health and safety requirements
  • Provide hands-on assistance to crews when required

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Several years of landscape construction experience required
  • Previous Lead Hand, Foreman, Crew Leader, or similar leadership experience preferred
  • Strong knowledge of landscape construction, including hardscaping, interlock, retaining walls, concrete preparation, excavation, grading, drainage, soil, sod, planting, and site preparation
  • Strong understanding of construction sequencing, proper base preparation, compaction, grades, and elevations
  • Ability to confidently read and interpret landscape and construction drawings
  • Experience using laser levels and construction measuring equipment
  • Ability to effectively manage and direct multiple crews and job sites
  • Strong leadership, organization, time-management, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to plan ahead, recognize potential issues, and make effective decisions in the field
  • Must be dependable, punctual, and able to work with minimal supervision
  • Must be able to speak, read, and write English effectively for job-site communication, drawings, specifications, and safety requirements
  • Valid driver's licence required
  • Experience operating skid steers, mini excavators, loaders, and other construction equipment is an asset
  • Must be physically capable of performing landscape construction duties and working outdoors in varying weather conditions

We are looking for someone who understands landscape construction from start to finish and can see the bigger picture across multiple projects.

The successful candidate must be able to keep crews productive, anticipate what is needed next, coordinate resources, maintain high-quality workmanship, solve problems, and ensure jobs continue moving efficiently while meeting schedules and deadlines.

Pay: $40.00-$55.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40.0 – 50.0 per week

Experience:

  • Landscape Construction : 5 years (required)
  • Previous Foreman / Lead Hand: 3 years (required)
  • Machine operation: 3 years (preferred)

Language:

  • English (required)

Licence/Certification:

  • Working at Heights Certificate (preferred)
  • WHMIS Certification (preferred)
  • Driving Licence (required)
