Full job description
Nor-West Firestop (BC) Inc. is a British Columbia–based contractor specializing in passive fire protection and firestopping services for commercial, institutional, and multi-residential construction projects. We install code-compliant firestop systems that prevent the spread of fire, smoke, and toxic gases through penetrations and joints in fire-rated assemblies. Our team is committed to quality workmanship, jobsite safety, and full compliance with the BC Building Code, the National Building Code of Canada, and applicable ULC/UL listed firestop systems.
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Firestop Installer to join our team. In this role you will be responsible for the installation of through-penetration firestop systems, joint firestop systems, and perimeter fire containment systems in new and existing buildings. Work covers three main categories: mechanical firestopping (around pipes, ducts, and HVAC penetrations), electrical firestopping (around conduits, cable trays, bus ducts, and power/data cabling), and architectural firestopping (head-of-wall, bottom-of-wall, joints, control joints, expansion joints, and openings in fire-rated walls and floors). Working from blueprints, shop drawings, and manufacturer-listed system details, the incumbent applies firestop sealants, mortars, intumescent products, putty pads, wraps, collars, and pillows to maintain the fire-resistance rating of walls, floors, and ceiling assemblies. The position requires close coordination with general contractors, electrical and mechanical trades, and inspection authorities.
Hours of work are 40 hours a week at $38.25 per hour. Union wages, extended health, benefits and pension are as per collective agreement.
Main Duties, Specializations and Responsibilities
General Firestop Installation
- Read and interpret blueprints, architectural drawings, shop drawings, and ULC/UL/cUL listed system details to determine the correct firestop system, materials, and assembly requirements for each penetration or joint.
- Prepare openings and surfaces by cleaning, removing debris, and ensuring proper fit and depth for firestop materials.
- Apply firestop sealants, caulks, putties, mortars, sprays, intumescent wraps, collars, pillows, composite sheets, and mineral wool backing in accordance with manufacturer specifications and listed assemblies.
- Label and document completed firestop assemblies with system identification, installer details, and date in accordance with project specifications and code requirements.
- Inspect and repair existing firestop assemblies that have been damaged, breached, or modified by other trades.
Electrical Firestopping
- Install firestop systems around electrical penetrations including conduits, EMT, rigid metal conduit, MC cable, BX cable, low-voltage cabling, fibre optic, and data/communications cabling.
- Firestop cable tray and bus duct penetrations through fire-rated walls and floors using listed sealants, putty pads, intumescent pillows, or composite sheet systems.
- Install putty pads on electrical outlet boxes, junction boxes, and back-boxes in fire-rated wall assemblies in accordance with listed assemblies.
- Coordinate with electrical contractors to firestop pre-installed and re-entered cabling without compromising the integrity of energized systems.
Architectural Firestopping
- Install head-of-wall (HOW) and bottom-of-wall (BOW) firestop joint systems at the intersection of fire-rated partitions with floor slabs, structural decks, and roof assemblies.
- Firestop linear joints, control joints, expansion joints, and seismic joints in fire-rated walls, floors, and floor-to-floor assemblies using approved spray, sealant, or pre-formed joint systems.
- Firestop construction joints, gypsum board joints, and openings around architectural elements such as door frames, window frames, and shaft walls in fire-rated assemblies.
- Install smoke seals and acoustic-rated firestop systems where required by drawings or specifications.
Mechanical Firestopping
- Firestop penetrations around metallic and non-metallic piping, including combustible plastic pipe (PVC, ABS, CPVC, PEX) using intumescent collars, wraps, or cast-in devices.
- Firestop HVAC duct penetrations, grease ducts, and combination fire/smoke damper installations in accordance with listed assemblies.
- Firestop sprinkler pipe and other fire protection system penetrations in coordination with the sprinkler contractor.
Site, Safety & Coordination
- Operate hand tools, power tools, caulking guns, mixing equipment, and material handling tools safely and efficiently.
- Work from scaffolding, swing stages, ladders, and elevated work platforms in accordance with WorkSafeBC requirements.
- Conduct daily jobsite hazard assessments and follow all WorkSafeBC, OH&S, and company health and safety policies, including the proper use of PPE and respiratory protection.
- Coordinate with site supervisors, general contractors, building inspectors, and other trades to schedule firestop work around mechanical, electrical, and structural installations.
- Maintain accurate daily reports, material usage logs, photographs, and quality control records of installed firestop assemblies as required.
- Perform housekeeping duties on the jobsite to maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
Required Qualifications
- 3 years of hands-on experience as a firestop installer or in a closely related construction trade involving the installation of firestop systems.
- Demonstrated ability to read and interpret construction blueprints, shop drawings, and manufacturer firestop listings (ULC/UL/cUL/Intertek).
- Working knowledge of fire-resistance ratings, building code requirements, and passive fire protection principles for mechanical, electrical, and architectural penetrations and joints.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work, including lifting up to 50 lbs, climbing ladders and scaffolding, and working in confined spaces, at heights, and in varying weather conditions.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to producing code-compliant, high-quality work.
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills in English.
Preferred Qualifications
- WHMIS 2015 certification.
- Fall Protection certification.
- Aerial Work Platform / Scissor Lift / Boom Lift certification.
Working Conditions
- Work is performed primarily on active commercial, institutional, and residential construction sites in the Lower Mainland and/or the Interior.
- Exposure to dust, fumes, noise, varying temperatures, heights, and confined spaces is typical.
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including hard hat, safety boots, safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, and respiratory protection is mandatory.
Compensation and Benefits
- Hourly wage of $38.25 per hour.
- Overtime paid at 1.5x the regular hourly rate in accordance with the BC Employment Standards Act.
- Statutory holiday pay and vacation pay paid as a percentage on each cheque as per collective agreement.
- Extended health and dental benefits as per collective agreement
- Some tools, PPE, and uniforms provided by the employer where required.
