Role Description
The Cook at Karakoram Restaurant is responsible for preparing and cooking authentic Pakistani dishes, including meats, curries, rice, and traditional side items, in accordance with standardized recipes and quality standards. Day-to-day tasks include food preparation, seasoning and marinating ingredients, operating kitchen equipment, monitoring cooking times and temperatures, and ensuring consistent taste and presentation. The Cook also maintains a clean, organized, and safe kitchen, assists with inventory and stock rotation, and collaborates with the kitchen team to manage orders efficiently during busy service periods. This is a full-time, on-site role located in Vancouver, BC.
Qualifications
- Experience preparing and cooking Pakistani or South Asian cuisine, with strong skills in handling meats, spices, and traditional cooking techniques.
- Knowledge of food safety, hygiene standards, and proper kitchen sanitation practices, including safe handling and storage of ingredients.
- Ability to follow recipes, manage multiple dishes simultaneously, and maintain consistency in flavor, portion size, and presentation.
- Strong time management and organizational skills to work efficiently in a fast-paced kitchen environment and coordinate with team members.
- Effective communication skills to collaborate with chefs, servers, and management, and respond to special requests or dietary needs.
- Previous experience as a Cook or Line Cook in a restaurant setting is preferred; formal culinary training or certification is an asset.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, based on restaurant needs.
- Physical ability to stand for extended periods, lift moderate weights, and perform repetitive kitchen tasks safely.
Job Duties
- Prepare and cook complete meals and individual dishes following Karakoram Restaurant’s recipes and standards, including karahi, biryani, kebabs, BBQ, curries, naan, rice dishes, and other Pakistani, Indian, and international cuisine.
- Prepare ingredients for daily operations, including cutting, trimming, marinating, seasoning, portioning, and storing meats, poultry, seafood, vegetables, and other food items.
- Assist in preparing specialty dishes and accommodate customer dietary requirements and special requests as directed by the Executive Chef or Kitchen Supervisor.
- Support the preparation and cooking of large-volume orders for catering events, banquets, weddings, corporate functions, and buffet services.
- Operate and maintain kitchen stations such as karahi, grill, tandoor, curry, fry, and prep stations.
- Supervise and guide kitchen helpers in food preparation, cleaning, stocking, and safe food handling practices.
- Oversee daily kitchen operations during assigned shifts to ensure timely service, food quality, and efficient workflow.
- Monitor food quality, portion sizes, presentation, and consistency according to restaurant standards.
- Maintain inventory records and assist with receiving, storing, rotating, and tracking food supplies and kitchen materials.
- Assist in estimating food requirements, managing portion control, and helping reduce food costs and waste.
- Monitor stock levels and report shortages or equipment needs to management.
- Train and support new kitchen staff and helpers on recipes, preparation methods, sanitation, and safety procedures.
- Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of all kitchen areas, equipment, and workstations throughout and after service.
- Follow all food safety, hygiene, and workplace safety regulations, including proper storage, labeling, and temperature control.
Pay: $25.00 per hour
