Full job description

Virgil Animal Hospital has an immediate opening for a full-time Veterinary Assistant / Receptionist to join our team.

As an independently owned practice, we are built on a foundation of teamwork, communication, respect, and compassionate care. This position is a blend of veterinary assistant and client care responsibilities, supporting both our medical team and our reception team. We are seeking a friendly, empathetic, outgoing, and hardworking individual who takes initiative, is eager to learn, and thrives in a busy environment while sharing our passion for helping pets and the people who love them.

Responsibilities

  • Welcome clients and their pets in a friendly, professional, and compassionate manner
  • Answer phones, emails, and client inquiries while providing excellent customer service
  • Schedule appointments and assist with client communication
  • Process payments and assist with front desk duties
  • Assist with patient intake and gathering medical histories
  • Compassionately handle and restrain patients during examinations, treatments, and procedures
  • Assist veterinarians and technicians with examinations, procedures, treatments, and surgeries
  • Prepare medications and assist with treatments as directed by the veterinary team
  • Prepare, clean, sterilize, and maintain medical equipment, instruments, and surgery packs
  • Clean and prepare examination rooms between appointments
  • Help maintain a clean, organized, and efficient clinic environment
  • Assist with laboratory duties, including collecting samples and running diagnostic tests

Qualifications

  • High school diploma required
  • Post-secondary education in an animal care-related program preferred
  • Veterinary clinic experience is strongly preferred
  • Client service or reception experience is considered an asset
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact professionally and empathetically with clients
  • Reliable, motivated, and team-oriented
  • Positive attitude and strong work ethic
  • Eagerness to learn and grow within the role
  • Ability to multitask and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment
  • Basic knowledge of veterinary terminology and medical procedures is considered an asset
  • Familiarity with Idexx Neo software is considered an asset
  • Ability to lift and safely handle animals of various sizes and stand for extended periods
