Full job description

About Us

Macdonald's Prescriptions has served Vancouver since 1926. Today we are a multi-site pharmacy group that includes community pharmacy, a dedicated renal pharmacy, non-sterile and sterile compounding laboratories serving hospitals, physicians and dental practices, and private pay and specialty clinics. Our teams include pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, compounding staff, and administrative and operations professionals who share a commitment to precise, patient-centred care.

The Opportunity

We are growing, and our people practices need to grow with us. We are looking for our first Director, Human Resources: a hands-on leader who will build the systems, policies and processes that let us hire well, keep great people and stay compliant across every part of the business. Reporting directly to the CEO, you will take full ownership of the HR function, from day-to-day employee relations to long-term workforce planning.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys building from the ground up, is comfortable rolling up their sleeves, and wants to see the direct impact of their work on a respected, long-standing organization.

Key Responsibilites

HR Strategy and Infrastructure

  • Assess and build: Evaluate current HR practices and design a scalable HR framework, roadmap and annual plan aligned with business goals.
  • HR systems: Select, implement and manage an HRIS for employee records, scheduling integration, time-off tracking, onboarding and reporting.
  • Policies: Develop and maintain an employee handbook and core policies, including conduct, attendance, leaves, remote work, privacy, respectful workplace and progressive discipline.
  • Documentation: Standardize job descriptions, offer letters, employment agreements and HR forms across all sites and departments.

Talent Acquisition and Onboarding

  • Own the full recruitment cycle for all roles, including pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, compounding lab staff, clinic and administrative staff.
  • Partner with pharmacy and lab managers on workforce planning, staffing levels and hiring priorities.
  • Build a structured onboarding program, including role-specific training checklists and probationary reviews.
  • Strengthen our employer brand and relationships with pharmacy schools, technician programs and professional associations.

Employee Relations and Performance

  • Serve as the first point of contact for employee concerns, workplace conflict, investigations and accommodation requests.
  • Design and run a consistent performance management process, including goal setting, regular check-ins and annual reviews.
  • Coach managers on feedback, documentation, discipline and terminations, and lead difficult conversations when needed.
  • Build engagement and retention initiatives, including recognition, stay interviews and exit interviews.

Compensation, Benefits and Payroll

  • Develop salary bands and a compensation philosophy informed by market data for pharmacy and healthcare roles.
  • Administer and evaluate group benefits, and manage the relationship with benefits brokers and providers.
  • Partner with finance and payroll to ensure accurate, timely payroll and HR data.

Compliance, Health and Safety

  • Ensure compliance with the BC Employment Standards Act, BC Human Rights Code, Pay Transparency Act, Personal Information Protection Act and other applicable legislation.
  • Track professional registration and licensure for regulated staff with the College of Pharmacists of BC, along with required certifications and training.
  • Oversee the occupational health and safety program in partnership with operations leaders, including WorkSafeBC requirements, the joint health and safety committee and incident reporting.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential employee records and support audits and inspections as required.

Learning, Culture and Leadership

  • Develop training plans and leadership development for supervisors and managers.
  • Foster a respectful, inclusive culture that reflects our values and nearly a century of community trust.
  • Report regularly to the CEO on HR metrics such as turnover, time-to-hire, vacancies and engagement

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration or a related field.
  • Minimum 2 years of progressive HR experience, including experience in an HR leadership or generalist-lead role.
  • Demonstrated experience building HR programs, policies and systems, ideally in a growing or multi-site organization.
  • Strong working knowledge of BC employment legislation and WorkSafeBC requirements.
  • Experience implementing and administering an HRIS.
  • Excellent judgment, discretion and ability to handle confidential matters.
  • Clear, confident communicator who builds trust with frontline staff and leadership alike.

Assets

  • CPHR (Chartered Professional in Human Resources) designation.
  • Experience in pharmacy, healthcare, life sciences or another regulated environment is preferred.
  • Experience supporting regulated professionals and licensure tracking.
  • Experience with compensation benchmarking and pay equity.

What We offer

  • A senior leadership role with direct access to the CEO & CFO and real influence over how the organization grows.
  • The opportunity to build an HR function from the ground up.
  • Competitive salary and extended health and dental benefits.
  • Professional development support, including CPHR designation and continuing education.
  • A collaborative team at a respected, family-rooted Vancouver institution.
