Full job description

Overview

Ember is a live-fire, wood and charcoal-driven restaurant in the heart of ByWard Market, and we're looking for a skilled Cook / Chef de Partie to join our kitchen team. The ideal candidate brings a genuine passion for ingredient-driven cooking, strong technical fundamentals, and the ability to thrive in a high-energy, production-focused environment. This is a hands-on role working directly with live fire — experience with or a strong interest in wood-fired and ember cooking techniques is a real asset. We hold ourselves to a high standard of quality, cleanliness, and hospitality, and we're looking for someone who shares that commitment.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and cook menu items to Ember's recipes, plating standards, and quality expectations
  • Execute live-fire, wood, and charcoal cooking techniques with precision and consistency
  • Manage station setup, mise en place, and breakdown to maintain a clean, organized workspace throughout service
  • Ensure all dishes leaving the kitchen meet our standards for taste, texture, and presentation
  • Follow proper food handling and sanitation procedures in compliance with Ottawa Public Health guidelines
  • Monitor station inventory and communicate replenishment needs to the Sous Chef or Executive Chef
  • Collaborate with the kitchen team to maintain smooth, efficient service during peak periods
  • Uphold all health, safety, and food safety policies at all times

Experience

  • Proven experience in a professional kitchen environment — restaurant, hotel, or equivalent
  • Comfort working with live-fire cooking methods is a strong asset; we're happy to train the right candidate
  • Solid knowledge of food safety standards and kitchen hygiene best practices
  • Strong mise en place discipline and the ability to work efficiently under pressure
  • A team-first attitude with good communication and a willingness to learn
  • Red Seal certification or culinary school training is considered an asset, but not required — we hire on skill and attitude

Pay: $18.00-$22.00 per hour

Benefits:

  • Dental care
  • Discounted or free food
  • Extended health care
  • Store discount
  • Vision care

Work Location: In person
