Nielsen Country Farms is seeking a Farm Hand to join our team and support the day-to-day care and upkeep of our farm operations. This position is based approximately 20 minutes north of Edmonton, AB,
About the Opportunity
The successful candidate will be responsible for the care and well-being of horses, smaller livestock, and other domesticated animals, as well as supporting cleanup, restoration, and maintenance of various properties. This role requires extensive horse experience, along with practical knowledge of livestock safety and biosecurity protocols. The farm also includes poultry and barn cats, with potential to expand to pigs, goats, and/or sheep.
The ideal candidate is physically capable, hardworking, and passionate about animals and rural life. The position requires a strong commitment to daily chore routines and suits someone who is organized, detail-oriented, adaptable, and comfortable working independently or as part of a team while taking direction and managing a variety of tasks positively.
While the operation is not currently an equestrian business and owners are not on site daily, there is a long-term interest in equine rehabilitation, senior horse care, and trail riding, and the role may evolve as the farm develops.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide daily feeding, care, and routine checks for horses (including those on pasture), poultry, small livestock, and barn cats.
- Clean stalls, pens, barns and coops in accordance with biosecurity protocols.
- Daily socialization/training of horses in basic haltering, leading, grooming, standing for veterinary procedures and hoof care etc.
- Operate a skid steer and/or tractor to move and place round bales, etc.
- Routine checks of fencing and waterers including repair and installation of gates and set up of electric fencing for horses.
- As part of an ongoing initiative, assist the owner in socializing, care and ultimate placement to new homes of several of the resident barn cats.
- Assist in the security of the properties including the owner’s residence with taking on the care of the owner’s pets should they be away from time to time and/or as required.
- Under the direction and in collaboration with the owner complete tasks associated with the renovations and maintenance of the properties which includes various. outbuildings, barns, two shops and associated residences which are at varying stages of occupancy & repair.
- Assist the owners with the archiving and storage of antiques and collectibles as well as the divesting of items including furniture and miscellaneous items that can be donated and/or are no longer required.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
- 10+ years’ experience with horses.
- Experience in handling large and small livestock and domesticated animals with the ability to provide appropriate injury care and administering of medications under veterinarian guidance.
- Experience and knowledge in horse care that includes for nutrition – diet related interventions, hoof care and trimming, treatment of injuries and coordinating with vets, farrier and owners as needed.
- Extensive past riding experience along with training and/or farrier work would be an asset.
- Knowledge of paddock and pasture management, as five new horses will be consolidated onto one property this summer.
- Experience in rehabilitation and senior horse care is preferred.
- Experience in working in a vet clinic, animal boarding and/or rescue environment is preferred.
- Must have reliable vehicle and class 5 driver’s license.
- Competent in driving a truck and trailer and/or managing loading and unloading of horses.
- Experience in operating of farm machinery as part of haying and harvesting activities is considered an asset.
- Experience in landscaping that includes operating of chain saws, clearing of brush, and planting of trees would be beneficial.
- Basic carpentry and/or trade experience is an asset.
