Adaptive In-Home Personal Trainer – Seniors and Adults With Disabilities
Company: GTA Personal Training and Rehab
Location: Greater Toronto Area, Ontario — in clients’ homes
Job type: Independent contractor / casual
Positions available: 2
Compensation: $40–$85 per 60-minute session + education fund
Workload: Gradual caseload development; no guaranteed minimum initially
About GTA Personal Training and Rehab
GTA Personal Training and Rehab provides individualized, evidence-informed exercise support in clients’ homes. We specialize in serving seniors and adults living with disabilities, chronic conditions and long-term functional limitations.
Many of our clients have completed formal rehabilitation but still need knowledgeable, consistent support to improve their strength, mobility, balance, physical capacity and independence. Our work is not conventional gym-based personal training, nor is it physiotherapy. It is adaptive personal training designed around each client’s abilities, medical considerations, goals and home environment.
We are currently looking for two exceptional personal trainers to join our growing team as independent contractors.
About the Opportunity
You will provide one-on-one, in-home personal training to clients within your agreed-upon GTA service zone. Clients will be grouped geographically whenever possible, and you will not be expected to travel throughout the entire GTA.
The caseload will build gradually as suitable clients become available. There is no guaranteed minimum number of sessions initially, so this opportunity may be particularly suitable for a qualified professional who wants to develop a specialized caseload alongside other work.
Once you accept a client, we expect professionalism, consistency and a genuine commitment to building a trusting long-term relationship with that individual and their family.
Compensation and Contractor Support
- $40–$85 per completed 60-minute session
- Compensation determined by directly relevant experience, education, certifications and advanced qualifications
- Full session compensation when a client cancels within the defined late-cancellation period
- Clients matched within your agreed-upon service zone
- No selling, prospecting or building your own client list required
- Professional-development funding toward approved continuing education
- Company-provided liability coverage for authorized sessions performed on behalf of GTA Personal Training and Rehab, subject to policy terms
- Scheduling arranged according to contractor availability and client needs
- Opportunity to develop a long-term caseload in a highly specialized and meaningful area of personal training
The top of the compensation range is reserved for applicants who bring substantial, directly relevant disability experience, advanced education and/or highly relevant professional credentials.
The Clients You May Support
Our clients may include seniors and adults living with:
- Cerebral palsy
- Muscular dystrophy
- Stroke-related impairments
- Spinal stenosis
- Spinal cord injuries
- Long-term effects of motor vehicle accidents
- Acquired brain injuries
- Amputation or limb difference
- Wheelchair or mobility-device use
- Balance limitations and elevated fall risk
- Neurological or neuromuscular conditions
- Chronic pain, deconditioning or long-term mobility limitations
- Multiple overlapping medical or functional considerations
Direct experience with these or comparable populations will be given considerably more weight than experience limited to general fitness, bodybuilding, athletic performance or short-term gym and sports injuries.
Responsibilities
- Deliver safe, individualized exercise sessions in clients’ homes
- Adapt exercises to each client’s disability, physical capacity, symptoms, environment and goals
- Develop and progress programs targeting strength, balance, mobility, cardiovascular capacity and functional independence
- Conduct appropriate baseline and progress assessments within your professional scope
- Monitor clients closely and modify sessions based on fatigue, pain, mobility, balance and day-to-day changes
- Recognize warning signs requiring exercise modification, medical clearance or referral to a regulated healthcare professional
- Follow restrictions and recommendations provided by physicians, physiotherapists and other members of a client’s healthcare team
- Maintain clear and timely session notes, progress records and incident reports
- Communicate professionally with clients, family members and caregivers
- Provide general evidence-informed nutrition and lifestyle education when qualified and appropriate, without providing medical nutrition therapy outside your scope
- Protect client privacy, dignity, autonomy and confidentiality
- Maintain reliable attendance and communicate scheduling changes promptly
- Use approved equipment safely and maintain a professional environment in every client’s home
Required Qualifications
- Current personal-training certification from a recognized certifying organization
- Direct experience working with seniors, people with disabilities or clients with complex long-term conditions
- Strong exercise-modification and program-design skills
- Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification, or willingness to obtain these before accepting clients
- Valid Ontario driver’s licence
- Reliable, appropriately insured vehicle and the ability to travel to clients within your selected GTA service zone
- Legal authorization to work in Canada
- Willingness to complete a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Patient, respectful and dependable approach
- Sound professional judgment and a clear understanding of personal-training scope of practice
Strongly Preferred Qualifications
We heavily favour applicants with directly relevant postsecondary education, including a bachelor’s or master’s degree in:
- Kinesiology
- Exercise science
- Exercise physiology
- Clinical exercise physiology
- Health sciences
- Rehabilitation science
- Adapted physical activity
- Athletic therapy or athletic training
- Gerontology
- Food and nutritional sciences
- Physiotherapy or occupational therapy
- Another closely related discipline
Additional qualifications are a major asset, including:
- Registered Kinesiologist — R.Kin
- CSEP Clinical Exercise Physiologist — CSEP-CEP
- Certified Athletic Therapist — CAT(C)
- Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist — CSCS
- Adaptive or inclusive fitness certification
- Older-adult exercise or fall-prevention certification
- Nutrition-coaching certification
- Mental Health First Aid
- Safe mobility, transfer or wheelchair-related training
A graduate degree is valued most when it is accompanied by practical experience working directly with people with disabilities or medically complex clients.
The Person We Are Looking For
The right trainer is not simply knowledgeable about exercise. You must be comfortable meeting clients where they are, including clients who may use wheelchairs, walkers or other mobility devices; have limited voluntary movement; fatigue quickly; communicate differently; or progress more slowly than a typical fitness client.
You should be:
- Compassionate without being patronizing
- Confident without exceeding your professional scope
- Able to challenge clients while respecting their limitations
- Comfortable working independently in clients’ homes
- Reliable enough to become a consistent part of a client’s support system
- Curious and committed to continuing education
- Skilled at building trust with clients, families and caregivers
- Motivated by functional outcomes such as safer transfers, fewer falls, easier stair use, improved walking and greater independence
Independent Contractor Arrangement
This is an independent contractor opportunity, not a guaranteed-hours employee position. Client referrals will be offered as suitable clients become available within your selected territory.
Contractors can identify their availability and preferred service areas. After accepting a client, contractors are expected to provide consistent service and meet all documentation, safety, confidentiality and professional standards contained in the contractor agreement.
