Full job description

Elves School Program (Elves) is seeking full time and on call casual early education and grades 1 -12 teachers with experience working with children or youth with complex needs associated with , health, physical, intellectual or psychosocial development. Classrooms team include educational assistants. Elves also employs speech and language pathologists, nurses, social workers, physical and occupational therapists and behavioural and early education experts.

Elves is a Designated Special Education Program (DSEP) accredited by Alberta Education. We are an independent school creating individualized program plans for each learner to ensure their education is tailored to their abilities, and providing success in learning and life. With over 50 years’ experience, our multidisciplinary team of experts are all on site to engage learners in their educational development.

Our learners are supported in an inclusive environment that addresses their abilities through modified/adapted Alberta Education curriculum, literacy programs, universal learning strategies, small classroom sizes, and differentiated instruction.

Reporting directly to the principal, the teachers’ responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

Essential Skills:

  • Proficient in teaching students of varying ability levels in a classroom setting.
  • Highly motivated to work within a multidisciplinary school environment.

Chief Responsibilities:

  • Consult with colleagues regarding student profiles.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate each student’s Individual Program Plan in conjunction with classroom team
  • Demonstrate skill in written work.
  • Maintain current attendance records, planning and plan book.
  • Work within a team setting, accepting and giving input from/to all members of the trans-disciplinary team at all stages from planning through to evaluation of student programming.
  • Experience working with learners with neurodiverse or medical needs is an asset.
  • Consistent and professional interpersonal skills will be demonstrated.
  • Organize classroom to facilitate a safe and effective learning environment, meeting student needs, parental expectations and the Society’s requirements.
  • Maintain professional contact with parents and other caregivers, and participate in meetings and conferences, as necessary
  • Supervise educational assistants, relief staff, practicum students and/or volunteers providing feedback and evaluation as required.
  • Develop formative evaluation/plan as outlined in Elves’ policies and procedures.
  • Participate in professional development activities.
  • Consistent practice of Centre policies and procedures and participate in routine Centre tasks and in-services.
  • Direct and indirect support towards the regulation, sensory, communication, mobility needs of learners.

Education and Other Related Experience:

  • B.Ed. Required
  • Valid Alberta Teaching Certificate
  • Specializations in Special Education and/or Early Childhood are preferred.
