About the Role

Vanguard Security Systems is hiring a Lead Security Systems Technician to run high-quality residential and light commercial security camera installations. You’ll be the on-site technical lead responsible for clean, reliable installs—from pre-wire planning and cable pulls to NVR setup, network configuration, commissioning, and customer handoff.

We primarily install Ubiquiti UniFi Protect and Reolink systems, but we’ll consider strong technicians from any security/low-voltage background who can learn fast and deliver professional results.

Key Responsibilities (What You’ll Do)Installation & Commissioning

  • Lead end-to-end installations of PoE and WiFi camera systems (and related low-voltage devices when applicable).
  • Perform site walkthroughs to confirm camera placement, fields of view, lighting, mounting surfaces, and coverage goals.
  • Run and terminate CAT5e/CAT6 to professional standards (labeling, testing, strain relief, bend radius, fastening).
  • Install and commission:
  • NVRs / recording systems, storage, and backups (where applicable)
  • PoE switches/injectors, routers, access points (as needed for stable performance)
  • UPS/battery backup and surge protection (where needed/quoted)
  • Configure systems:
  • Network settings (DHCP/static IP, VLAN basics if required, port usage, remote access)
  • Camera settings (resolution, FPS, bitrate, WDR, IR, motion/zones, AI/smart detections)
  • User accounts, permissions, notifications, mobile apps, and client training
  • Validate performance: coverage, motion triggers, playback, remote access, and reliability before sign-off.

Wiring Quality & Jobsite Standards

  • Maintain clean wiring practices: neat routing, concealed runs when possible, proper fastening, weather sealing, drip loops, tidy rack/cabinet work.
  • Drill, fish, and route cables through attics/walls/basements safely and with minimal disruption.
  • Mount cameras and hardware securely and professionally (stud/structure awareness, exterior sealing, cold-weather considerations).
  • Document installs: photos, as-built notes, port maps, labeling scheme, device inventory, and client credentials handoff (securely).

Leadership & Operations

  • Act as technical lead on-site: coordinate helpers/juniors, assign tasks, and maintain quality control.
  • Support estimating teams with technical input (cable pathways, equipment needs, tricky runs, network limitations).
  • Troubleshoot issues: connectivity, PoE power, IP conflicts, WiFi strength, firmware/app problems, storage and playback issues.
  • Provide post-install support as needed (service calls, upgrades, warranty assessments).

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • 2+ years experience in security cameras, low-voltage, telecom, networking, or related field (or equivalent proven capability).
  • Strong hands-on ability with:
  • CAT5e/CAT6 cable pulls, termination, and testing
  • PoE systems (802.3af/at/bt basics), switches, injectors
  • Basic networking: IP addressing, DHCP, SSID/WiFi troubleshooting, port mapping
  • Software commissioning: mobile apps, NVR interfaces, remote viewing setup
  • Demonstrated ability to produce clean, professional installs (wiring management and finish quality matter here).
  • Comfortable working on ladders and in attics/basements/crawlspaces.
  • Valid driver’s license; reliable transportation (company vehicle may be provided depending on role/market).
  • Clear communication: can explain systems to customers without jargon and handle expectations professionally.

Strong Assets (Nice to Have)

  • UniFi Protect experience (Ubiquiti cameras, UNVR/UDM, PoE switching, UniFi Network).
  • Reolink experience (PoE + WiFi models, NVRs, smart detection tuning).
  • Experience with structured cabling standards (TIA/EIA), patch panels, racks, and labeling.
  • Familiarity with:
  • VLANs, VPNs, port forwarding (where applicable), basic firewall concepts
  • Doorbells/intercoms, access control, alarm integration (optional)
  • Industry certifications (not required but valuable): BICSI, CompTIA Network+, manufacturer certs, low-voltage license (where applicable).

What Success Looks Like (Non-Negotiables)

  • Install quality that looks “built-in,” not “thrown together.”
  • Systems that are stable: no dropouts, no mystery cables, no messy app handoff.
  • Jobs completed on schedule with clear documentation and a clean work area.
  • Customers who understand their system and can confidently use the app.

Work Conditions

  • Mix of residential and light commercial work.
  • Physical role: lifting, ladder use, tight spaces, exterior work in varying weather.
  • Standard tools required; specialty tools may be provided or reimbursed depending on agreement.

Compensation & Benefits (Customize for Your Posting)

  • Competitive hourly rate or salary based on experience.
  • Performance bonuses for high-quality installs and efficiency (optional).
  • Company vehicle/fuel card (role-dependent).
  • Paid training on UniFi/Reolink standards and Vanguard install methodology.
  • Growth path: Lead Tech → Field Supervisor / Install Manager

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $24.00-$35.00 per hour

Experience:

  • Security Camera Installation: 2 years (preferred)

Work Location: On the road
