Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

This position will perform a secondary triage of 911 calls and using clinical judgement in conjunction with a computer decision support system triage callers to appropriate levels and point of care to address immediate health care needs. In addition, the ECN will provide mandatory callbacks to patients twenty-four hours post initial call to ensure that health care needs were met. The ECN will also provide clinical decision making support to Emergency Medical Dispatchers (EMDs) and if necessary re-contact callers to further assess health care needs.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

  • Current Certificate of Competence for a Registered Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (B.ScN.) or equivalent
  • Completion of a course in Crisis Intervention or Emergency Medical Dispatch an asset
  • Core & CAD Ambulance Communication 240 hour course or equivalent preferred, will train if necessary
  • ECNS training and certification preferred, will train if necessary
  • Successfully complete a modified System Status Controller training program
  • A valid cardiopulmonary resuscitation certificate to Level C at the time of employment
  • Fluency in French an asset

KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of three (3) years’ recent experience in the health care field involving direct patient care in an emergency care environment (Emergency Department)
  • Superior knowledge of Regional Niagara, its district transportation systems and roadways
  • Excellent knowledge and experience performing clinical triage
  • Experience in a patient-centered care environment
  • Experience in a peer-reviewed practice environment
  • Good working knowledge of applicable legislation
  • Good general knowledge of the Canadian Health Care System
  • Good appreciation of the issues facing Ontario’s health care system
  • Good general knowledge of Emergency Medical Services
  • Excellent knowledge of general medical and trauma conditions that may present during a 911 call
  • Excellent knowledge of prescription pharmaceuticals
  • Proficiency with computers, telecommunications and peripheral equipment
  • 2 years of EMS ambulance communications in a major city is an asset
  • Emergency Medical Services field experience or regularly scheduled field time an asset

SKILLS

  • Excellent ability to communicate clearly, effectively, and professionally under high stress conditions
  • Excellent ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality

Excellent typing ability, including the ability to type accurately while performing a medical assessment

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

In accordance with the Corporate Criminal Record Check Policy, the position requires the incumbent to undergo a Criminal Records Check and submit a Canadian Police Clearance Meets and maintains the professional practice standards as defined by the College of Nurses of Ontario Current member of the College of Nurses of Ontario, held in good standing without restrictions Must successfully complete the “CritiCall” Evaluation test Must successfully complete a written evaluation Must successfully achieve course certification as an Advanced Emergency Medical Dispatcher (A-EMD), (may require travel) within 3 months of appointment and maintain thereafter Must successfully achieve course certification in Emergency Communication Nurse System (ECNS) (may require travel) within 3 months of date of appointment and maintain thereafter Must successfully achieve Emergency Communication Nurse System Quality Improvement certification within 3 months and maintain thereafter Must successfully complete modified Ministry of Health Core-CAD certification Maintenance of CPR certification required
