Public Health Inspector

Permanent Full Time
The Public Health Inspector is responsible for carrying out the public health programs and services in the areas of
prevention, enforcement, promotion, protection and education, which are based upon Ontario Public Health
Standards and Guidelines, as well as provincial and local legislation. The Public Health Inspector performs public
health inspections, investigations, enforcement of health protection regulations, promotion of public health
principles and eliminates or decreases infectious diseases and health hazards that impact the well-being of the
community.
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
The Public Health Inspector is responsible for carrying out the public health programs and services in the areas of
prevention, enforcement, promotion, protection and education, which are based upon Ontario Public Health
Standards and Guidelines, as well as provincial and local legislation. The Public Health Inspector performs public
health inspections, investigations, enforcement of health protection regulations, promotion of public health
principles and eliminates or decreases infectious diseases and health hazards that impact the well-being of the
community.
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
- Inspect facilities and premises to assess compliance with pertinent acts, regulations and by-laws
- Collect samples for analysis; measure physical, biological and chemical conditions. Assess hazards and
conduct environmental audits
- Maintain timely and accurate documentation in accordance with Grey Bruce Public Health policy
- Ensure that the privacy and confidentiality of client information (including client records) is maintained
- Be responsible for professional competence under appropriate legislation and the Canadian Institute of Public
Health Inspector Standards
- Participate in program, operational plan and policy and procedure development to meet the objectives of the
Ontario Public Health Standards and Protocols while fulfilling the core competency requirements of the
profession
- Investigate complaints and initiate enforcement procedures to ticket or to close an establishment
- Work collaboratively with inter-disciplinary professionals and community contacts.
SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Communicate in a clear and professional manner, orally and in writing
- Strong interpersonal, planning and organizational skills
- Knowledge of environmental public health sciences and pertinent acts, regulations and municipal by-laws
- Keep abreast of current issues and technical advances in public health inspection
- Demonstrate consistency and fairness when assessing compliance
- Demonstrate ability to function independently and as a team member
- Knowledge of electronic communication systems (i.e. Hedgehog, MS365)
- Able to make oral presentations to individuals and in a group setting
- Committed to a safe and healthy work environment for both employees and clients
EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS
- Baccalaureate Degree in Environmental Health and has been awarded the CPHI(C) credential by the Board of
Certification, Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors

The current wage scale for the position of Public Health Inspector is $41.24 to $50.81 per hour.
