Full job description

Robertson is the School of New Work. Our vision is for everyone to have a good life through a prosperous and fulfilling career. Our mission is to empower our learners with the most relevant training and up-to-date industry insights so that they may find fulfilling and meaningful careers.

Robertson has an instructor accountability framework that includes instructor observation, feedback, evaluation, and development. This framework focuses on instructor accountability as part of building a strong foundation for quality education at Robertson, and is an essential piece of the Quality Assurance framework.

The Education Consultant for Instructor Observations will be responsible for completing observations of instructors at one of our campus locations: Calgary, Edmonton, or Winnipeg.

Role Overview

Reporting to the Director, Teaching and Learning, the Education Consultant is a member of the Education team and is responsible for providing timely, transparent, and fair observation feedback to instructors in all schools.

The Consultant advances the Centre’s purpose: to provide a strong foundation for quality education at Robertson. The Consultant supports, models, and enacts the guiding principles of the Centre that are based on adult learning principles and best practices in training and vocational education.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support instructors in enhancing teaching practices in alignment with Robertson’s teaching and learning mission, vision, and mandate by conducting observations and providing feedback

  • Model professional communication both verbally and in writing

Education, Experience, and Skills
  • Required:
    • Subject Matter Expertise (education and experience) in one or more of the following:
      • Winnipeg: Pharmacy Assistant, Medical Lab Assistant, Health Care Aide, Nursing Assistant
    • Strong computer and digital literacy skills
    • Ability to work independently
    • Strong communication skills
  • Considered an asset:
    • A certificate or degree related to adult education
    • Experience in hybrid (online and face-to-face) teaching and learning
    • Experience in vocational training is an asset

Observation and feedback format:
  • Observations are completed 2 or 3 times per year per instructor or on an as-needed follow-up basis
  • Some observations are completed in-person and on-campus during a scheduled class.
  • Some observations are completed virtually by watching a recording of a class.
  • Observations and feedback are recorded on a google form; most instructional competencies are marked ‘observed’ or ‘not observed’ with space for comments about each competency

Observation timing and compensation:

  • In-person observations are approximately 2 hours in length (not including travel), and compensation is $120 per observation.
  • Virtual observations are approximately 1 hour in length and compensation is $50 per observation.

Observations are assigned through a running list of current course offerings; the number of observations per week is the decision of the consultant, as long as the assigned observations are completed in a timely manner and the ‘deliverable’ number of observations is completed during the contract period.

Consultancy Period: usually 6 months in length with the possibility to extend

Deliverables:
  • Complete 20-30 observations in specific program(s)

  • Provide feedback and recommendations to improve the instructional delivery of courses

Remuneration for the Contract: dependent upon the number of observations completed.
