Full job description

Ruah Counselling Centre, a non-profit community counselling agency, provides individual, couple and family counselling, as well as psycho-educational groups, workshops and presentations to those 16 years of age and older who reside in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Ruah provides professional counselling services in an environment which supports client autonomy and well-being. We utilize a person-centered approach that promotes the mental health and well-being of individuals, families and communities.

Ruah is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Counsellor to join our team. This position provides clinical and therapeutic counselling to individuals, couples, and families through in-person, virtual and telephone sessions. Counselling client base may vary, depending on incumbent skills, experience, ability and work assignment, however there will be a special focus on increasing reach to clients in rural and remote communities through virtual and telephone counselling services. Counselling is provided using a broad range of theoretical frameworks and professional analysis of individual, family, group and community dynamics within a biopsychosocial framework.

The position is required to function with a significant degree of independence and initiative, with work assessed by the Executive Director through periodic review and accomplishment of assignments. Self-management and prioritization of caseload/workload is necessary in this position, while referring to the Executive Director for guidance as necessary. The position may, at times, require facilitation of group programs, workshops and presentations. Adherence to legislative requirements, Ruah Inc. policies and procedures, and professional standards and codes of conduct (depending upon professional membership), is essential.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Applies a client-focused and goal-oriented approach based on trust and respect, providing professional counselling services in an environment which supports client autonomy and well-being
  • Provides counselling services to clients and information regarding relevant supportive services available in the community; completes intake assessments; plans and implements therapeutic intervention services and engages in discharge planning
  • Provides community liaising, support, referral, and general outreach (with a special focus on rural and remote communities) on available resources for clients
  • Consults and coordinates client services with other agencies, professionals and systems; participates, as requested, in liaising and networking on issues pertaining to clients and to Ruah Inc.
  • May engage in planning, developing and facilitating group presentations, sessions, and workshops
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of client records
  • Completes caseload statistics and provides this information to Executive Director
  • Uses designated outcome measurement tools with clients in therapeutic work
  • Informs clients of sliding scale fee schedule; ensures session fees are collected from all paying clients through liaison with Office Manager
  • Performs other related duties consistent with skills and abilities

Education and Experience Requirements:·

  • Master’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counselling Psychology or related field
  • 3-5 years of clinical experience preferred
  • Experience working with individuals, couples, and families
  • Experience in group work, including research and development of selected groups would be considered an asset

Other Requirements:

  • Active registration and good standing with a professional regulatory body
  • Liability insurance of $5M
  • A certificate of conduct and vulnerable sector check through the RNC
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Proficiency in:

  • Knowledge of ethical, legal and professional requirements for delivery of mental health services
  • Ability to conduct counselling sessions in-person, virtually and/or by telephone (depending on client need)
  • Understanding of evidence-based counselling theories and approaches for individuals, couples and family counselling
  • Ability to develop rapport with and establish trust with clients and their families
  • Interviewing and assessment skills, particularly in complex situations
  • Ability to effectively respond to crisis situations in a timely manner
  • Problem solving and conflict resolution skills
  • Facilitation skills
  • Research and program development
  • Knowledge of community agencies and resources
  • File management while ensuring clarity, conciseness and adherence to legal, ethical and policy requirements
  • Expertise in Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, and internet use
  • Ability to use technology/equiptment necessary to conduct virtual and telephone sessions
