Diamond Drillers (Surface) – Northern Ontario - Pickle Lake

Orbit Garant is seeking three (3) Surface Drillers to join our premier project in Pickle Lake Ontario.

The Schedule

  • Schedule including 14/7 or 28/14
  • Rotating days and nights.
  • Remote surface work in Northern Ontario

What You Bring

  • Minimum of 1 year of continuous diamond drilling experience.
  • Preference will be given to candidates holding valid Ontario Common Core (Surface Diamond Driller #770200) transcripts and MLITSD registration.
  • All candidates must provide a proven record of safety and technical proficiency in a surface drilling environment.
  • Proven ability to hit the ground running, troubleshoot surface rigs, and maintain high safety standards in remote environments.

Responsibilities

Drilling Operations

  • Oversee the drilling process to ensure it is conducted safely, efficiently, and effectively.
  • Set up and operate the drilling rig and associated equipment.
  • Monitor drilling parameters, including oil, air, voltage, amperage, water pressure, lights and warning systems, temperature, and system pressure, and make necessary adjustments to optimize drilling performance.
  • Apply advanced diamond drilling techniques to achieve drilling objectives.
  • Make informed decisions regarding bit selection, drilling parameters, and core retrieval strategies.
  • Adapt to changing conditions and solve complex technical challenges that may arise during drilling.
  • Ensure the accuracy and reliability of drilling data and core samples.
  • Contribute to project planning and execution to ensure project objectives are met.
  • Manage drilling progress to ensure project timelines and productivity are maintained.
  • Read and interpret layouts before commencing work to familiarize yourself with hole locations, the job site environment, and potential safety hazards.
  • Use layout measuring and reference dimensions.
  • Communicate the current status of layout information to workers, engineers, geologists, and supervisors as required, to keep all parties informed of the current status of drilling production work.
  • Verify drilling specifications, including hole location, depth, size, azimuth, and inclination, according to the layout.
  • Identify and respond to safety notices, including hazardous gases, breakthroughs, remote drilling areas, geological structures, high water pressure, and flow, by guarding, communicating, and monitoring.
  • Perform emergency shutdown by deactivating all power sources and ensuring the safety of oneself and others.
  • Perform emergency evacuations.

Rig Operation and Maintenance

  • Perform advanced maintenance and troubleshooting on the drill rig and associated equipment to minimize downtime and ensure optimal performance.
  • Conduct operational checks on the drill by activating the power source(s); monitoring gauges and meters, including oil and air pressure, lights and warning systems, temperature, alternator output, transmission, and torque pressure; listening for unusual noises in the engine/power train; and repairing and/or reporting deficiencies.
  • Maintain fluid levels and lubricate grease points on drill components to ensure optimal performance.
  • Monitor system components, including gauges, meters, and computer monitor(s).

Safety Leadership

  • Enforce all safety protocols and procedures to maintain a safe working environment for the entire crew.
  • Proactively identify and mitigate potential hazards to prevent accidents or incidents.
  • Promote a safety-conscious culture within the drilling team.
  • Inspect and scale the workplace.

Supervision and Mentorship

  • Direct and oversee the Drill Assistant, providing guidance and support as needed.
  • Train, mentor, and support the Drill Assistant's professional development.
  • Effectively communicate with the drilling crew and other personnel to ensure smooth operations.

Specialized Techniques

  • Proficiently perform specialized drilling techniques, including wedging, casing installation, and depth determination, where and when applicable.
  • Operate utility vehicles to transport materials and/or personnel.
  • Operate various hand and power tools, including wrenches, hammers, screwdrivers, grinders, drills, and saws.
  • Set up the drill, including inspecting and preparing the workplace, reading the layout, organizing the workplace, extending services, setting up lighting, operating lifting devices, lining up and leveling the drill, installing anchors, staging, rod racks, safety devices, water pumps, connecting air/water services, connecting hydraulic hoses, and setting up safety barriers.
  • Move drill and equipment by reading and interpreting the layout, planning the drill's destination, determining the moving method, securing loads, and storing equipment.
  • Operate lifting mechanisms, including tugger hoists, winches, electric or manual chain blocks, block and tackle, come-alongs, and jacks.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Handle the core by emptying the core tube, placing the core in the core box, securing and identifying the core boxes, and preparing and maintaining the core tube assembly.
  • Tear down diamond drill and equipment by disconnecting drill anchors, preparing for transport, operating lifting equipment, disconnecting services, packaging drill and equipment, and tearing down safety barriers.

  • Maintain a high level of alertness and situational awareness at all times.
  • Prioritize tasks effectively and manage time efficiently to meet deadlines and objectives.
  • Demonstrate a strong work ethic and commitment to quality in all aspects of the job.
  • Follow instructions accurately and efficiently.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Valid and current driver's license.
  • Ability to work 10 to 12-hour shifts on a rotation schedule, including day and night shifts.
  • Comfortable with frequent travel to various mine sites and remote locations.
  • Reliable source of transportation.
  • Physical ability to handle demanding tasks, including lifting and maneuvering heavy equipment.
  • Valid and current First Aid
  • Strong commitment to safety and following procedures.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Eagerness to learn and develop new skills.
