Build Calgary's essential infrastructure through the Green Line LRT program. The City of Calgary is hiring a Senior Project Engineer, Systems to support the planning, coordination, execution, integration, testing, commissioning, and delivery of systems scope for the Green Line LRT - SE Project, including traction power, signaling, train control, communications, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), overhead catenary systems, and related systems works.

This role helps ensure that systems designs are feasible, meet contract specifications, and systems are delivered safely, on time, within budget, and in accordance with engineering standards, regulatory requirements, and project objectives. The Senior Project Engineer-Systems will support and collaborate with designers, delivery partners, contractors, regulatory agencies, utilities, and internal City business units while providing technical oversight, coordination, mentoring, and direction across the full lifecycle of Systems delivery from design and construction through testing, commissioning, handover, and revenue service readiness. Primary duties include:

• Ensure project objectives, budget, schedule, performance standards, safety requirements, and quality expectations are achieved in compliance with City of Calgary policies, procedures, standards, specifications, and contract requirements.
• Provide technical support and expertise for systems scope, including traction power, signaling and train control, communications, SCADA, overhead catenary systems, testing, commissioning, and transition to revenue service.
• Manage communication and coordination between the Delivery Partner, contractors, designers, internal teams, utilities, regulatory agencies, and other external partners.
• Coordinate interfaces between systems scope and other project disciplines to support seamless infrastructure integration, operational readiness, and system functionality.
• Oversee design, construction, testing, commissioning, and handover activities by reviewing submittals, technical requirements, field practices, and contractor deliverables for compliance with project requirements.
• Apply Systems Engineering and Systems Assurance principles to refine test plans, V&V processes, and ensure a robust safety case is delivered.
• Support procurement, tendering, contract administration, change management, and performance monitoring for systems-related professional services and construction packages.
• Monitor project delivery, including financial accountability, schedule adherence, risk management, quality control, and compliance with reference designs and performance specifications.
• Proactively identify, assess, and mitigate technical, cost, schedule, interface, commissioning, and operational risks and issues.
• Prepare and maintain reports, dashboards, briefing materials, technical documentation, risk registers, issue logs, and presentations to support senior leadership and project partners.
• Provide technical direction, mentoring, and support to engineers, support staff, consultants, Delivery Partner representatives, and contractors while fostering a collaborative, safety-focused, and high-performance culture.

• Oversee project close-out and transition activities, including documentation, systems acceptance, operational readiness, lessons learned, and handover to operations and maintenance teams.

  
  

• A degree in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related engineering field.
• At least 8 years of relevant professional engineering experience managing or supporting the design, construction, integration, testing, commissioning, or delivery of LRT, rail, transit, or major infrastructure projects, including at least 5 years of systems-related experience on projects involving complex infrastructure systems, preferably LRT, rail, or transit experience obtained after receiving your P. Eng. Designation and a current licensure as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) complete with practicing status OR licensure and practicing status by the first day of work. • Experience in risk management and quality management, with a strong understanding of project management processes, methodologies, and governance in complex project environments.
• Strong understanding of contract administration, interface management, systems integration, partner coordination, and collaborative issue resolution.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities using a reasonable, balanced, and solutions-focused approach.
• Strong communication and decision-making skills, with the ability to work independently and under pressure to meet tight deadlines.
  

Position and Pay Information

• Position Type: 1 Permanent and 1 Temporary (up to 24 months)
• Compensation: Level P4E $138,475 - $173,094 per annum
• Hours of work: Standard 35 hour work week.
• Days of work: This position works a 5-day work week with 1 day off in a 3 week cycle.
