Academic Geriatrician (Vacant)
Description

The Department of Medicine and the Division of Geriatric Medicine at the University of Ottawa and the Ottawa Hospital is looking for an Academic Geriatrician.

The Division of Geriatric Medicine is renowned for delivery of outstanding care and recognized internationally for its programs, including creating the foundation for the development of the globally endorsed and communicated Geriatrics 5Ms: Mind, Mobility, Medications, Multi-complexity & Matters Most, as a way to explain what Geriatricians do. The Division of Geriatric Medicine consists of a dynamic group of 14 full-time academic Geriatricians within a progressive Department of Medicine. The Division is an integral partner of the Regional Geriatric Program of Eastern Ontario (http://rgpeo.com) which manages a wide spectrum of services for older people within the region.

The Ottawa Hospital is a 1445-bed tertiary-care hospital serving Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec at four inpatient sites (Civic, General, Heart Institute, and the Rehabilitation Centre) and one ambulatory centre (Riverside). The hospital provides approximately 67,450 inpatient admissions, 178,200 emergency visits and one million ambulatory care visits annually.

Ground-breaking medical research is conducted through The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) and the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. We rank among the top 4 hospitals in Canada for Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) funded research and overall research funding. Over 2,300 researchers, trainees, and staff contribute to a highly productive research environment, generating more than 2,200 scientific publications annually, including many high-impact studies.

The Department of Medicine is a research-intensive department supporting a large and diverse academic community. Our members are leaders in advancing clinical care, research excellence, and academic excellence.

The Faculty of Medicine is a nationally recognized leader in medical education and research, contributing significantly to the University of Ottawa’s standing among Canada’s top research-intensive universities. The University of Ottawa is the largest bilingual (English/French) university in the world, and the Faculty of Medicine is the first and largest bilingual medical school in Canada.

The City of Ottawa offers a vibrant, multicultural, and bilingual environment with access to diverse cultural, recreational, and outdoor activities, making it an excellent place to live and work.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will perform clinical services, teach and supervise medical students and residents as well as participate in medical research. Clinical activities include an acute care inpatient Geriatric Medicine Unit, consultation teams at two campuses, and specialized ambulatory clinics. Rural clinics, a regional Geriatric Emergency Management program and Geriatric Assessment and Outreach teams lead the way in community-based assessments of older adults with the goal of targeting specialized geriatrics services. There are also services offered in French at the Montfort Hospital. Additionally, there is a Memory Disorders program at the Elisabeth Bruyère Hospital.

We have an expanding variety of research activities, including clinical (dementia & driving, frailty and pre-op assessment, delirium management, mobility, optimal prescribing), health services delivery (collaborative specialty care such as TAVI, orthopedics, trauma) and medical education.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will be a specialist in Geriatric Medicine. The successful candidate must be eligible to be licensed to practice medicine in Ontario; be a member of, or be eligible to be a member of, the Canadian Medical Protective Association; and have or be eligible for certification in Geriatric Medicine by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

The successful candidate will be eligible to hold an academic appointment at the rank of an Assistant Professor or higher at the University of Ottawa. Academic rank will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience. The University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital are bilingual institutions and therefore in the case of potentially successful candidates of equal ability, a bilingual (French/English) candidate would be preferred.

Job Benefits

The income for this position is derived from a variety of sources including but not limited to clinical billings (fee-for-service), salary support (AFP) as well as honorariums/stipends. Health and welfare benefits including extended health, dental and disability insurance as well as life insurance are offered to full-time physicians.

Additional Information

The Department of Medicine is committed to equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility, and encourages applications from individuals from equity-deserving groups. Accommodations are available upon request throughout the recruitment process.

Please note Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority. We sincerely thank all applicants for their interest; however, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.

Contacts

Please forward a 1-2 page letter of intent, 3 references (who will not be contacted without permission) and a CV to Dr Lara Khoury, Head Division of Geriatric Medicine, Department of Medicine The Ottawa Hospital and University of Ottawa at domcareers@toh.ca .
