Heavy Equipment Operator – Civil Infrastructure Construction

Location: Bolton, ON / Project Sites Across the GTA and Ontario

About Us

Esposito Bros. Construction Ltd. is a long-standing heavy civil contractor based in Bolton, Ontario. Since 1981, we have delivered municipal and public infrastructure projects across the GTA and surrounding areas, including bridges, culverts, retaining walls, roads, sewers, watermains, and structural concrete works.

We are currently seeking experienced Heavy Equipment Operators to join our field operations team. We are looking for reliable and skilled operators with experience operating excavators, dozers, loaders, skid steers, and other heavy civil construction equipment on municipal infrastructure projects.

This is an excellent opportunity for experienced operators who take pride in safe production, quality workmanship, equipment care, and working as part of a strong field crew.

Position Summary

The Heavy Equipment Operator will be responsible for the safe, efficient, and productive operation of heavy construction equipment on active civil infrastructure projects.

The successful candidate will support excavation, trenching, sewer and watermain installation, bridge and culvert construction, roadwork, grading, backfilling, demolition, material handling, site preparation, and restoration activities.

The ideal candidate is safety-focused, experienced in civil infrastructure construction in Ontario, able to work well with foremen and crews, and capable of operating equipment with care, precision, and productivity.

Equipment Types

We are seeking operators with experience on one or more of the following:

  • Excavators
  • Dozers
  • Front-end loaders
  • Skid steers
  • Backhoes
  • Rollers / compactors
  • Graders, where applicable
  • Other heavy civil construction equipment

Experience operating multiple types of equipment is considered a strong asset.

Key Responsibilities

Equipment Operation

  • Safely operate heavy equipment in accordance with company policies, site requirements, and applicable safety regulations.
  • Operate equipment for civil infrastructure projects, including bridges, culverts, roads, sewers, watermains, retaining walls, and structural concrete work.
  • Perform excavation, trenching, grading, backfilling, loading, demolition, material handling, and site preparation.
  • Work around utilities, structures, traffic, workers, survey stakes, live infrastructure, and active construction zones.
  • Complete work accurately according to grades, elevations, site layout, drawings, and instructions from the Foreman or Superintendent.
  • Maintain production while prioritizing safety, quality, and equipment care.

Excavator Operator Responsibilities

  • Excavate trenches for sewer, storm, and watermain installation.
  • Assist with installation of trench boxes, shoring, bedding, pipe zones, backfill, and compaction.
  • Excavate for bridge abutments, retaining walls, culverts, footings, road reconstruction, and structural concrete works.
  • Perform bridge, culvert, road, concrete, and asphalt demolition where required.
  • Load trucks safely and efficiently.
  • Work around existing utilities, buried services, traffic, structures, and workers.
  • Complete fine excavation and detailed work around structures, pipes, and services.
  • Maintain safe trench conditions and work closely with the Foreman, pipe crew, and labourers.

Dozer / Loader / Grading Responsibilities

  • Perform rough grading, fine grading, backfilling, spreading, stripping, and site preparation.
  • Move, place, and grade granular material, earth, asphalt, concrete, and other construction materials.
  • Support road construction, subgrade preparation, granular placement, restoration, and site cleanup.
  • Operate loaders for loading trucks, stockpiling materials, feeding crews, moving materials, and maintaining site access.
  • Support compaction, backfilling, trench restoration, roadway construction, and general earthworks.
  • Maintain proper slopes, grades, and drainage as directed by the Foreman or Superintendent.

Equipment Maintenance & Inspections

  • Complete daily pre-operational inspections and report defects, damage, or maintenance concerns immediately.
  • Grease, lubricate, refuel, and maintain equipment as required.
  • Check and top up fluids as required.
  • Keep equipment clean, organized, and in good working condition.
  • Identify mechanical issues, safety concerns, leaks, worn components, or equipment damage.
  • Operate equipment with care to reduce unnecessary wear, downtime, and repair costs.
  • Maintain accurate inspection records and equipment-related documentation as required.

Health & Safety

  • Follow Esposito Bros. Construction Ltd.’s Health & Safety Program and all applicable OHSA requirements.
  • Operate equipment safely around workers, traffic, overhead hazards, excavations, utilities, structures, and public areas.
  • Participate in toolbox talks, Job Hazard Analyses, site orientations, and safety meetings.
  • Maintain awareness of ground conditions, slopes, trench edges, overhead wires, underground services, blind spots, and other hazards.
  • Communicate clearly with spotters, foremen, labourers, truck drivers, and other operators.
  • Report hazards, incidents, near misses, unsafe conditions, and equipment defects immediately.
  • Use proper PPE and safe work procedures at all times.

Teamwork & Communication

  • Work closely with Foremen, Superintendents, labourers, pipe crews, concrete crews, truck drivers, and other operators.
  • Follow direction and execute work plans safely and efficiently.
  • Communicate clearly using hand signals, radios, verbal instructions, and site procedures.
  • Support crew productivity by being punctual, prepared, reliable, and accountable.
  • Maintain a positive and professional attitude on site.
  • Assist with problem-solving and field coordination as required.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of experience operating heavy equipment in civil construction preferred.
  • Experience must be related to civil infrastructure construction projects in Ontario.
  • Strong experience operating excavators, dozers, loaders, skid steers, or other heavy civil equipment.
  • Experience with sewer and watermain, roadwork, bridges, culverts, excavation, grading, demolition, or municipal infrastructure.
  • Valid driver’s licence required.
  • Must currently reside in Ontario and must be legally authorized to work in Canada.
  • Ability to reliably commute to project sites throughout the GTA and Ontario.
  • Strong understanding of construction site safety and equipment operation best practices.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to work in a physically demanding construction environment.
  • Ability to work with small crews and larger project teams.
  • Ability to work overtime, weekends, nights, or shift work when required by project schedules.
  • Reliable, hardworking, safety-conscious, and production-focused.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience on municipal infrastructure or MTO-related projects considered an asset.
  • Experience with trenching, shoring, pipe installation, excavation around utilities, bridge work, culverts, retaining walls, and structural concrete.
  • Experience with GPS, grading systems, lasers, survey stakes, elevations, and fine grading considered an asset.
  • Ability to operate multiple equipment types considered a strong asset.
  • Clean driver’s abstract preferred.
  • DZ or AZ licence considered an asset.
  • Safety certifications considered an asset, including:
  • WHMIS
  • Working at Heights
  • First Aid / CPR
  • Confined Space Awareness
  • Traffic Control / Book 7
  • Basics of Supervision
  • Hoisting and Rigging Awareness

Work Conditions

  • Work may involve exposure to traffic, heavy equipment, noise, dust, mud, water, weather, excavations, confined spaces, overhead hazards, and physically demanding site conditions.
  • Candidates must be comfortable working outdoors and around active civil infrastructure construction operations.

Schedule

  • Day shift.
  • Monday to Friday.
  • Weekends as needed.
  • Overtime as needed.
  • Night shifts may be required depending on project requirements.
