Job Summary:

This is a working supervisor position and is responsible for performing steel mesh, rebar, and steel-cage fabrication alongside the crew while directing daily steel-shop activities and ensuring all required steel is safely completed and ready for production each day.

Responsibilities will be as follows, but not limited to:

Working Supervisor Duties:

  • Work directly alongside steel-shop employees while maintaining active supervision, direction, and support throughout the shift.
  • Plan, assign, and prioritize daily steel-shop work based on production schedules, drawings, staffing, material availability, and required completion times.
  • Communicate daily goals, work instructions, drawings, hazards, controls, and quality requirements, and confirm employees understand the work before starting.
  • Monitor work progress, attendance, productivity, conduct, and quality; provide coaching and direction and escalate unresolved concerns to management.
  • Ensure employees are trained, competent, and authorized before operating cranes, rigging, fabrication machinery, welding equipment, power tools, or other specialized equipment.
  • Lead required toolbox talks and job-hazard reviews and enforce PPE, safe-work procedures, machine guarding, lockout/tagout, hot-work, hoisting, rigging, and housekeeping requirements.
  • Verify required pre-use inspections are completed, remove defective tools, equipment, and rigging from service, and stop or correct unsafe work before it continues.
  • Inspect work in progress and completed steel cages and components for compliance with drawings, dimensions, engineering details, and quality-control requirements.
  • Report hazards, near misses, incidents, injuries, equipment damage, production delays, and quality concerns, and assist with investigations and corrective actions.
  • Maintain required supervisory and production records and coordinate with management, Production, Quality Control, Maintenance, and Health and Safety to resolve issues and maintain workflow.

Hands-On Steel Shop Duties:

  • Fabricate, assemble, and install rebar and steel components required for precast concrete panels.
  • Perform assigned hands-on steel-shop tasks while maintaining supervisory oversight and meeting production, safety, and quality standards.
  • Measure, cut, bend, and prepare rebar and steel materials according to design specifications and production requirements.
  • Manufacture individual parts used in the fabrication of steel cages with accuracy and consistency.
  • Build complete steel cages in various shapes, sizes, and levels of complexity without assistance.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, manuals, and production specifications to ensure correct assembly of reinforcement.
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, and specialized fabrication equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Use rebar tying tools, cutters, benders, and welding equipment (if applicable) to construct reinforcement systems.
  • Set up, position, and secure reinforcement within molds to meet structural, dimensional, and quality-control requirements.
  • Hands-On Steel Shop Duties (continued):
  • Operate overhead cranes up to 25 tons to lift, move, and position rebar bundles, cages, and steel components safely.
  • Inspect materials for defects and ensure all reinforcement meets engineering and quality standards.
  • Collaborate with production teams to maintain workflow, meet deadlines, and resolve reinforcement-related issues.
  • Follow all health, safety, and quality procedures while maintaining a clean, organized, and hazard-free work area.
  • Perform daily housekeeping duties to support efficiency, safety, and compliance.
  • Document completed work and communicate progress, delays, material needs, hazards, or quality concerns to management and Quality Control personnel.

Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience performing steel, rebar, mesh, or steel-cage fabrication in an industrial or precast-production environment.
  • Previous supervisory, lead-hand, or crew-lead experience with the ability to assign work, coach employees, and remain accountable for crew performance.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, fabrication details, bar lists, and production specifications.
  • Working knowledge of Ontario health and safety requirements and steel-shop hazards, including machinery, welding, overhead cranes, rigging, material handling, and suspended loads.
  • Required training, competency, and authorization for the equipment and tasks assigned to the role, including crane, rigging, welding, or fabrication equipment where applicable.
  • Self-starter who can manage daily priorities from clear directions, goals, drawings, and production requirements.
  • Team-oriented with strong leadership, communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to safely perform regular physical work and lift materials weighing up to 50 lb when required.
  • Ability to safely navigate the active steel shop and production worksite daily.
  • Valid Ontario G-class driver's licence and clean driving abstract.
