Full job description

We are currently seeking a Habitat Restoration Ecologist to join our team based out of our Whitecourt office. This is a full-time permanent position that is focused on ecological assessments, construction environmental oversight and habitat restorations. This position strategically leverages a vast amount of ecological spatial field data to implement restoration plans for regulatory compliance at the landscape level. Project work is rewarding, team based, safety driven and is completed for the energy and forest sectors throughout the province.

sition Responsibilities

  • This position is accountable for safe and efficient project work;
  • Manage project deliverables and working relationships with Woodlands’ peers, management and clients;
  • Initiate, develop and execute continuous improvement initiatives and best practices;
  • Assist the Operation Manager with the scheduling and management of projects.


Position Requirements and Qualifications

  • Experience in watercourse crossing assessments and restorations;
  • Experience with construction environmental oversight or supervision of road building, right-of-way and well site development, clearing and harvesting operations, culvert and bridge installations;
  • Knowledge of vegetation, wetland, watercourse, wildlife and soils data collection;
  • Knowledgeable in current restoration best management practices for terrestrial habitat restoration of linear features such as legacy roads and seismic for caribou habitat restoration;
  • University Degree or technical diploma is required in Environmental, Earth Science, Forestry, Biology or Engineering;
  • Professional registration or eligibility in one of Alberta’s Professional Regulatory Organizations;
  • Qualified Aquatic Environmental Specialist;
  • Expert at stream construction of Abiotic Features - slope, gradient, roughness, chemistry, wood, planted vegetation, cover and shape for recruiting biotic features or accelerating the watercourse rate of recovery;
  • Knowledgeable of Federal and Provincial environmental legislation, regulations, and permitting;
  • Minimum experience of 4 years;
  • Strong analytical and reporting skills;
  • Ability to maintain a valid class 5 driver’s license with a clean abstract;
  • Ability to move a variety of initiatives forward at the same time;
  • Ability to demonstrate a safety and customer service focus.
