Safety Officer - Healthcare & Institutional Projects
Shunda Construction | Full-Time | Central Alberta
Since 1978, Shunda Construction has been building commercial, institutional, educational and seniors' residential projects throughout Alberta - more than 45 years of delivering work we're proud to put our name on. We pride ourselves on our teamwork, our commitment to safety, and holding ourselves to the highest standards on every project we take on.
We are currently seeking a full-time Safety Officer to join our team, based out of Central Alberta, working directly with our Safety Manager to build out and administer our Alberta Health Services (AHS) specific safety program.
Why this role exists
A growing share of our work takes place inside operating hospitals, clinics, continuing care facilities and other institutional buildings environments where the building never truly shuts down and where the people around our work are patients, residents, clinical staff and the public.
Those projects carry a layer of requirements that go well beyond a standard construction site: infection prevention and control, interim life safety measures, isolations and shutdowns, and owner-specific protocols that must be documented and defensible. We're looking for someone who has lived in that environment and can help us formalize it into a program our field teams can actually run with.
This is a build-it role as much as a monitor-it role. If you've been the person who kept a construction zone airtight next door to an occupied patient wing and could explain to the facility why it was safe we want to hear from you.
What you'll be doing
- Working alongside the Safety Manager to develop, document and roll out our AHS-specific safety program, including procedures, forms, training materials and site-level tools
- Conducting site inspections, audits and hazard assessments across active projects, with a focus on healthcare and institutional sites
- Administering Infection Control Risk Assessment (ICRA) requirements; hoarding and containment, negative air, dust and debris control, and daily monitoring in and around clinical zones
- Supporting Interim Life Safety Measures (ILSM), fire-alarm and life-safety isolations, hot work permits, shutdown requests and other owner-controlled permitting processes
- Liaising with AHS facility representatives, infection control practitioners, and owner safety personnel on site requirements, screening, access control and pre-construction risk assessments
- Delivering orientations, toolbox talks and subtrade onboarding tailored to occupied-facility work
- Investigating incidents and near misses, completing reporting, and following through on corrective actions
- Maintaining safety documentation, records and statistics, and supporting COR audit readiness and prequalification submissions
- Coaching superintendents, foremen, subtrades and field staff; building safety culture through presence and mentorship rather than paperwork alone
- Monitoring compliance with Alberta OHS legislation, Shunda protocols and owner-specific requirements
We are looking for someone who has experience with or a willingness to learn the following
- Demonstrated safety experience in healthcare, continuing care or institutional environments this is the core of the role
- Working knowledge of ICRA, infection prevention and control practices, and CSA Z317.13 (infection control during construction, renovation and maintenance of health care facilities)
- Familiarity with AHS contractor safety expectations, facility standards and permitting processes is a strong asset
- Safety designation or progress toward one NCSO, CHSC, CRSP or equivalent
- Solid grounding in Alberta OHS legislation, code of practice development and hazard assessment methodology
- Current certifications such as CSTS, Standard First Aid, Fall Protection, WHMIS, Confined Space and Aerial Work Platform
- Experience supporting or maintaining a COR certified safety program
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; you'll be dealing with tradespeople, project managers, facility operations staff and clinical personnel, often in the same day
- Strong detail orientation, organizational skills and comfort building documentation from the ground up
- Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to learn new digital safety and reporting systems
- Valid Alberta driver's licence and willingness to travel to project sites throughout Central Alberta and beyond
- Comfortable meeting owner-specific site orientation, screening and security requirements
What we offer
- A welcoming working environment where your experience is valued and your voice is heard
- Competitive compensation based on experience and qualifications
- Extended health care and dental benefits
- Company vehicle and phone
- Real ownership over a program you help create, with the support of an established Safety Manager and leadership team that backs safety decisions
- Opportunities for learning and growth across a diverse portfolio of healthcare, institutional, educational, commercial and seniors' housing work
- A stable, well-established Alberta general contractor with more than four decades of repeat clients and a reputation built on doing it right
How to apply
Please submit your resume outlining your relevant healthcare, institutional and safety program experience.
We thank all applicants for expressing interest in this opportunity. However, only qualified candidates will be contacted. No phone calls and/or drop-ins please.
