Job Summary:

The City Dispatcher coordinates and dispatches local drivers to ensure timely and efficient deliveries while maintaining exceptional customer service. This role requires strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills to manage schedules, track shipments, and address real-time operational challenges. The dispatcher will also ensure compliance with company policies, safety regulations, and transportation industry standards.

Job Duties

  • Assign and schedule drivers for efficient pickup and delivery operations.
  • Optimize routes to ensure timely deliveries while minimizing costs and delays.
  • Coordinate with the US dispatch team for cross-border shipments requiring local cartage assistance.
  • Adjust driver schedules in response to workload demands, traffic conditions, or last-minute changes.
  • Monitor and track shipments in real time, ensuring accurate status updates.
  • Provide drivers with clear instructions, including route details, delivery requirements, and any potential road hazards.
  • Advise drivers on traffic conditions, weather updates, and road closures to improve efficiency.
  • Assist customer service with customer inquiries related to shipment status, delays, or service requests.
  • Communicate service issues with the Customer Service team to ensure proactive problem resolution.
  • Ensure drivers comply with company policies, safety regulations, and industry best practices.
  • Monitor driver logs and adherence to Hours of Service (HOS) regulations.
  • Report and escalate safety concerns or incidents to the Safety and HR departments.
  • Arrange for necessary vehicle repairs or maintenance to maintain operational efficiency.
  • Utilize dispatch software, GPS tracking systems, and other digital tools to optimize fleet operations.
  • Maintain and update a real-time transportation database, including rates, equipment, fuel surcharges, and shipment details.
  • Assist to process and document transportation requests from customers efficiently and accurately.
  • Analyze operational data to identify trends and opportunities for improving efficiency.
  • Track and evaluate driver performance, ensuring adherence to service standards and productivity goals.
  • Identify operational challenges and develop solutions to improve efficiency and customer satisfaction.
  • Prepare and maintain reports on delivery times, service metrics, and dispatch efficiency.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications & Skills:

  • 3+ years experience in dispatching, logistics, or transportation coordination preferred.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to multitask and remain calm in a fast-paced environment.
  • Familiarity with dispatching software, GPS tracking, and transportation management systems.
  • Knowledge of local and regional transportation regulations and compliance requirements.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
