Salary Range/based on experience: $36.00 to $46.00

Position Summary

The Horizontal Directional Driller (HDD Operator) is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of directional drilling equipment used in the installation of underground utility infrastructure, including telecommunications, hydro, gas, water, sewer, and fiber optic systems. The successful candidate will operate drilling equipment, interpret utility locates, perform bore planning, and ensure all work is completed in accordance with Ontario health and safety regulations, company standards, and project specifications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) equipment to install underground conduits, pipes, and cables.
  • Conduct pre-job site assessments, bore planning, and utility locate verification.
  • Read and interpret utility drawings, site plans, and project specifications.
  • Perform drilling operations using tracking and guidance systems to ensure accurate bore paths.
  • Monitor drilling fluid systems and maintain proper drilling conditions.
  • Complete pilot bores, reaming operations, and product pullbacks safely and efficiently.
  • Perform routine inspections, preventative maintenance, and minor repairs on HDD equipment and support vehicles.
  • Ensure compliance with Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and company safety policies.
  • Coordinate daily activities with supervisors, locators, laborers.
  • Identify and mitigate risks related to underground utilities and environmental conditions.
  • Maintain accurate daily production reports, equipment logs, and safety documentation.
  • Respond appropriately to unexpected underground conditions and utility conflicts.
  • Participate in safety meetings, toolbox talks, and training initiatives.

Qualifications

Required

  • Minimum 1 year of experience operating Horizontal Directional Drilling equipment
  • Valid Ontario Class G Driver’s License (DZ/AZ license considered an asset) with a clean driving record
  • Experience with Vermeer, Ditch Witch, or similar HDD equipment.
  • Strong knowledge of underground utility construction practices.
  • Ability to read utility locates, construction drawings, and engineering plans.
  • Knowledge of drilling fluid systems and bore path tracking technology.
  • Understanding of Ontario One Call procedures and safe excavation practices.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.

Preferred

  • Experience installing fiber optic, telecommunications, gas, hydro, or municipal infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of GPS and electronic tracking systems.
  • Previous supervisory or crew lead experience.
