We have an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated, independent individual to fill the full-time position of Bylaw, Compliance and Enforcement Officer I. Under the direction of the Manager of Inspection Services, you will work as part of a team responsible for permits and bylaw enforcement throughout the Fraser Valley Regional District. The scope of work for this position includes reviewing permit applications for compliance and investigating and resolving bylaw complaints.

Required knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Post-Secondary education in Criminology or have completed the Bylaw and Investigative Skills course (Level I) as offered by the Justice Institute of B.C;
  • Working knowledge of inspection and investigative work, bylaw compliance/enforcement strategies, methods and tools;
  • Have a working knowledge of standard planning, building and engineering nomenclature, practices and methods.
  • Must possess knowledge of the bylaws and regulations of the Regional District and the applicable sections of the Local Government Act, Community Charter, and other regulations applicable to bylaw compliance and enforcement.
  • Must have the ability to write and update bylaws, policies and procedures as required.
  • Understanding of geotechnical requirements, environmental practices, agrology, planning and development procedures and requirements, building processes, etc.
  • Must be proficient in the latest computer technology and programs.
  • Ability to deal diplomatically with the public, using a courteous and tactful, yet firm manner.
  • Ability to handle conflict, ambiguity and public pressure without escalating.
  • Ability to work effectively alone with minimum supervision, and to work well as part of a team.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, including skills in conflict resolution.
  • Must be willing to be subjected to a criminal records check.
  • Must possess a valid Driver’s License


The job rate for this full-time union position is $44.38 per hour plus a competitive and comprehensive health, dental, and vision package and enrollment in the Municipal Pension Plan.
