Position Overview

The Heavy Duty Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, servicing, repairing, and maintaining company equipment, trucks, fleet vehicles, trailers, tools, and related assets. This role supports safe and productive operations by ensuring equipment is maintained in reliable working order and defects are identified and corrected promptly.

The Mechanic works in the shop and may also support field repair needs. This role requires practical troubleshooting ability, strong mechanical knowledge, and a consistent focus on safe, high-quality maintenance work.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

Inspection, Maintenance, and Repair

  • Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, and repair work on heavy equipment, trucks, trailers, and fleet assets.
  • Troubleshoot hydraulic, mechanical, electrical, air, and related system issues.
  • Complete repairs in accordance with company expectations, manufacturer requirements, and safe work practices.
  • Identify worn or defective components and recommend corrective actions.

Equipment Readiness and Reliability

  • Support operational readiness by completing work in a timely manner.
  • Report major issues, recurring failures, and repair concerns to shop supervision.
  • Test equipment where appropriate before return to service.
  • Assist with field repairs and breakdown response as required.

Documentation and Shop Coordination

  • Complete work orders, repair notes, service records, and parts documentation accurately.
  • Communicate parts requirements, delays, and equipment status to supervision.
  • Maintain tools, service areas, and shop equipment in good condition.
  • Support shop organization and efficient workflow.

Safety and Housekeeping

  • Follow lockout, servicing, lifting, and general shop safety procedures.
  • Maintain clean and safe work areas.
  • Use tools, jacks, stands, and support equipment properly.
  • Report hazards, incidents, and unsafe conditions immediately.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Mechanical experience with heavy equipment, trucks, fleet maintenance, or related repair work.
  • Strong troubleshooting and repair ability.
  • Working knowledge of hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical systems.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Good organizational and communication skills.
  • Valid driver’s licence.

Required Certifications

  • Relevant Trade certification.
  • WHMIS.
  • Forklift training.
  • Other training / certifications may be implemented / required, as needed.

Working Conditions

  • Primarily shop-based with possible field repair work.
  • Exposure to noise, grease, vibration, weather, and moving equipment.
  • Physically demanding work involving lifting, climbing, bending, and tool use.
  • May require periodic overtime to address emergency equipment issues.
  • PPE required at all times as appropriate to the work.

Career Path

This role may progress to Lead Mechanic, Shop Foreman, or other maintenance leadership positions based on performance, certification, and company needs.
