Food Safety Coordinator
Company: Prairie Flour Mills Ltd.
Location: Elie, Manitoba
Position Type: Full-Time, Permanent
Position Summary
Prairie Flour Mills Ltd. is a Manitoba-based flour milling company supplying premium wheat flour products to bakeries, food manufacturers, food service distributors, and retail customers throughout North America.
We are currently seeking a motivated, detail-oriented, and organized Food Safety Coordinator to join our team. This position is responsible for maintaining and continuously improving the Food Safety and Quality Management System to ensure compliance with BRCGS, Safe Food for Canadians Regulations (SFCR), Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), customer requirements, and all applicable regulatory standards.
The Food Safety Coordinator is responsible for overseeing and continuously improving the site's Food Safety and Quality Management System to ensure compliance with BRCGS standards, regulatory requirements, and customer expectations. The role emphasizes preventive controls, hazard analysis, biological and physical hazard management, and fostering a strong food safety culture across the organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain, update, and continuously improve the site's Food Safety and Quality Management System to ensure ongoing compliance with BRCGS requirements.
- Verify, maintain, and update the HACCP/Food Safety Plan and supporting food safety programs including GMPs and prerequisite such as sanitation, traceability, allergen management, pest control, food defense, food fraud.
- Ensure compliance with the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations (SFCR), Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), and applicable customer food safety requirements.
- Plan, conduct, and coordinate internal food safety audits and serve as a key contact during regulatory, customer, and third-party audits.
- Oversee the document control system and the environmental monitoring program.
- Conduct routine GMP and food safety inspections to identify and address operational, structural, and environmental risks.
- Verify and maintain the Approved Supplier Program, including supplier documentation and ongoing compliance.
- Prepare and complete customer technical documentation, product specifications, questionnaires, and other food safety-related requests.
- Investigate customer complaints, food safety incidents, internal non-conformances, and out-of-specification products; perform root cause analysis and implement effective Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA).
- Develop, coordinate and deliver onboarding and refresher training on HACCP, GMPs, food safety, and related programs.
- Coordinate and document bi-annual mock recalls, traceability exercises, and mass balance activities to verify the effectiveness of the traceability system.
- Promote and support a strong food safety culture through continuous improvement initiatives.
- Assist with validation and verification activities for food safety controls and prerequisite programs.
- Participate in process improvements, and food safety initiatives.
- Work collaboratively with Milling, Production, Maintenance and Quality teams to resolve food safety issues.
- Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Must be legally authorized to work in Canada.
- Bachelor’s degree in food science, or related discipline is preferred.
- Equivalent combinations of education and relevant food manufacturing experience will be considered.
- Minimum two (2) years of experience in a food manufacturing environment is preferred.
- Working knowledge of HACCP principles and preventive controls.
- Knowledge of BRCGS, SQF, FSSC or other GFSI-recognized food safety standards is considered an asset.
- Knowledge of Safe Food for Canadians Regulations (SFCR), CFIA regulations, and Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA).
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
- Comfortable working around flour dust, production equipment, and manufacturing operations and commitment to workplace safety and continuous improvement.
