Overview

Sunnyside Produce is looking for an Assistant Grower to join the company and work with a diverse workforce. You will be tasked with assisting the Head Grower with daily duties, and a support to taking care of various compliances, to audits that we are engaged annually. Outside of the roles outlined below, there will be basic crop work to be done such as picking and pruning.

Sunnyside Produce is a family-owned company that grows bell, mini sweet and crescendo peppers for the North American market. We currently have 85 acres, one of the most high-tech greenhouses in the world.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Work with the Grower and be able to ensure labor is properly planned, organized, coordinated and implemented.
  • Communicate regularly with the Grower to provide information regarding crop applications, irrigation needs, crop movement, and timing.
  • Assist in planting, fertilizing, and pruning plants to promote healthy growth.
  • Assist in irrigation systems management, maintenance, and troubleshooting to ensure optimal watering schedules.
  • Help monitor plant health through collecting data, identification and control of Bios and Pests, Diseases, and Nutritional deficiencies.
  • Will safely operate hand tools and some basic mechanical equipment for planting and maintenance tasks.
  • Maintain cleanliness, organization, and maintenance in growing, storage, irrigation areas, and roof (which would include operating a roof washing robot).
  • Help monitor and manage Priva/Priva Assist.
  • Help in maintaining standards with various compliances: Food Safety/Canada Gap; Ethical; Canadian Food Inspection Agency; Agrichemical Warehousing Standard Association; WorksafeBC; etc.
  • Collect data on plants and labor and be able to analyze them.
  • Apply and mix fertilizers and pesticides as needed.

Requirements and Preferred Skills

  • English Fluency
  • Spanish language is sure an asset
  • Forklift operations and First Aide certificate are an asset
  • A team player, self starter, with critical thinking, and problem-solving ability
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft office (Excel and Word)
  • Secondary school graduates, but a Horticulture diploma is surely an asset.
  • British Columbia Driver’s License (Required); or Ability to commute/relocate
  • Assistant Grower experience for at least a year (required)
  • Has worked in a Greenhouse for at least year (required)
  • Previous years of experience handling Tomato crop in Greenhouse environment is a great plus.
