Full job description

The Black Heart Café prides itself on the culinary creations served from the modern kitchen, and is looking for an experienced and passionate Cook to help support the team. The ideal candidate for this position has previous experience in the culinary industry, as well as catering and enjoys working in a busy restaurant environment. They will need to be capable of taking direction well and multi-tasking effectively. The position will be required to work different shifts throughout the week and week-end.

Responsibilities:

  • The position will be responsible to prepare pastry items, baked goods, sandwiches, salads and soups and various food items in accordance with recipe standards, Health and Safety and Food Handling guidelines.
  • Additionally, the position will have to receive and put away goods, maintain organization of fridges and freezers, and insure the proper rotation of products.
  • The position will ensure upkeep of kitchen equipment and maintain cleanliness of the work environment before, during and after the work shift.
  • The position may be asked to wash dishes and help with other housekeeping duties.
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent knowledge of Health and Safety and Food Handling guidelines.
  • Knowledge of cooking fundamentals, modern techniques, and practices.
  • Must possess a passion for food, and have creativity as well as a developed palate.
  • Knowledge of Inuit culture is beneficial.
  • Ability to multitask, and good time management skills are essential
  • Able to work as part of a team in a busy atmosphere
  • Able to read and follow standardized recipes
  • Experience with Rational equipment as well as Sous-vide equipment is a definite asset
  • Food safe and WHMIS certification is an asset

The ideal candidate would have culinary education and related experiences.

** Shared staff housing is available**

Job Types: Full-time, Contract

Pay: $19.00-$25.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 – 50 per week
