Member Representative – Inshore Fishery

FFAW-Unifor is seeking a Member Representative to service members in the Inshore Fishery sector. This is a full time, permanent position. Reporting to FFAW-Unifor Management, the Member Representative is the front-line point of contact for harvesters. This position is responsible for the communication, analysis and advocacy on fisheries management issues, collective bargaining, negotiations, conducting membership meetings, participation on fisheries stock assessments and advisory meetings and building union solidarity amongst FFAW-Unifor members.

Responsibilities:

· Act as a liaison between fish harvesters and other industry players
· Knowledge of current and evolving fisheries management issues
· Develop relationships with fish harvesters and gain an understanding of issues affecting them
· Identify potential areas of concern for harvesters and work to develop and implement solutions
· Research and identify ways to improve or maintain socioeconomic well-being of fish harvesters and their communities
· Facilitate membership meetings and conduct committee elections
· Participate in the price negotiations process for different species
· Work with harvesters to find areas of opportunity within the industry including identifying and developing emerging fisheries and stock assessment analysis
· Extensive travel required throughout your area of responsibility
· Work with FFAW-Unifor science department to facilitate fisheries science projects between fish harvesters and fisheries researchers

Qualifications

· Strong ability to work independently and in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment
· Knowledge of and/or experience in the commercial fishery in Newfoundland and Labrador
· Ability to communicate effectively with fish harvesters including strong oral and written communications skills
· Good judgement, conflict resolution, troubleshooting and teambuilding skills
· Knowledge of trade unions and social issues
· Experience advocating for workers
· Experience facilitating membership meetings as well as strong meeting facilitation skills
· Ability to clearly and effectively interpret and communicate fisheries management issues|
· Knowledge of the collective bargaining process
· Valid drivers license and clean driving abstract
