Full job description

Who We Are

Read on Roads Inc. is an established road construction and pavement preservation company based in High River, AB. Our crack sealing crews protect Alberta's road infrastructure preventing water intrusion, extending pavement life, and keeping highways, roads, and commercial lots serviceable for the long term.

We run professional equipment, we look after our people, and we take quality workmanship seriously. If you are a hands-on labourer who wants to build real skills in a specialised trade and earn solid pay doing it, this is the role for you.

The Role

As a Crack Sealing Labourer, you will work as part of a coordinated asphalt maintenance crew applying hot-pour rubberised sealant to cracks in roads, highways, and parking lots. This is technical, skilled field work you will operate specialised heating and application equipment, work on active roadways, and be responsible for the quality of every crack you seal.

Important Travel & Schedule

This is a travel-based, seasonal position. You will work away from home for the majority of the season on project sites across Alberta. Shifts run 10–12 hours, including weekends and occasional nights depending on project requirements. If you are ready for that commitment, the pay, the overtime, and the crew culture make it worthwhile.

What You'll Do

  • Crack Preparation: Operate air compressors, heat lances, and wire brushes to clean and dry cracks removing vegetation, dirt, and debris to ensure proper sealant adhesion before application.
  • Sealant Application: Safely operate crack sealing kettles and melters; use application wands and squeegees to apply hot rubberised asphalt sealant into prepared cracks efficiently and to spec.
  • Material Management: Load solid sealant blocks into the melting kettle and monitor temperatures throughout the shift to prevent overheating or material degradation (sealant temps exceed 350°F precision matters).
  • Finishing: Apply detackifier or fine sand over freshly sealed cracks to prevent tire tracking before the sealant fully cures the last step that separates a quality job from a poor one.
  • Traffic Control & Work Zone Safety: Assist in establishing safe work zones on active roadways, flag traffic when required, and maintain constant situational awareness throughout the shift.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Clean wands, hoses, and kettles at end of shift; perform routine pre- and post-shift inspections to ensure all equipment is safe, operational, and ready for the next day.

What We Offer

  • $20–$25/hr based on experience reflecting the specialised, safety-critical nature of this work
  • Overtime pay on qualifying hours long shift seasons mean real OT earnings
  • Bi-weekly pay on schedule, every two weeks
  • All equipment and PPE provided no out-of-pocket gear costs
  • Hands-on training in specialised asphalt maintenance and crack sealing techniques
  • Potential for year-round work strong seasonal performers are first considered for summer road construction crews
  • A professional, safety-focused crew that takes care of each other on every site

What We're Looking For

Required

  • Valid Class 5 driver's licence (GDL fully removed) with a minimum 3-year clean driver's abstract
  • Alberta Flagging Ticket (Traffic Control Certificate) must be current and valid
  • Minimum High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate clearly in English on active job sites
  • Physically capable of lifting up to 50 lbs and performing strenuous outdoor work throughout a 10–12 hour shift
  • Willingness and ability to travel and work away from home for the majority of the season — this is essential to the role
  • Comfortable working safely around hot materials (350°F+) and in active traffic environments

Valued Assets (Not Required Training Available for the Right Candidate)

  • Prior experience in crack sealing, sealcoating, or asphalt maintenance
  • Additional safety tickets (H2S Alive, First Aid, Confined Space, Fall Protection all considered an asset and accepted)
  • Experience operating air compressors, heat lances, or hot-pour kettle equipment
  • Class 3 driver's licence or higher

Pay: $18.00-$25.00 per hour

Application question(s):

  • Can you drive to the designated located?

Willingness to travel:

  • 50% (required)

Work Location: In person
