Full job description

WHO WE ARE

Watson & Barnard is a land surveying and geomatics engineering firm based in Delta, B.C. The firm has served the Lower Mainland since 1971 and today employs roughly twenty staff across professional, technical, field, and administrative roles.

Our work spans cadastral and engineering surveys, topographic and construction survey, RPAS-based mapping, control networks, and coastal and foreshore work. Clients include private landowners, developers, contractors, infrastructure firms, municipal, provincial and federal agencies, and First Nations communities — several of whom we have worked with continuously since the 1980s.

WHAT WE DO

  • Legal (cadastral) surveys — subdivisions, air space parcels, strata, rights-of-way, and easements
  • Construction layout and engineering surveys
  • Topographic surveys for design, permitting, and special projects
  • Deformation and monitoring surveys
  • Higher-order control networks
  • Aerial mapping and spatial data processing
  • Coastal and foreshore surveys

Field crews run Leica GNSS, robotic total stations, digital levels, scanning instruments, and RPAS. Office work is done in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroSurvey Infinity, and Agisoft.

THE ROLE

This is an experienced field position. You will run a small crew, operate instruments independently, and be trusted to make reliable decisions on site.

This role suits someone with several years in the field who is ready to be the person the crew relies on, and who wants to keep developing on the legal and computational side of the work.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Operate GNSS receivers, robotic total stations, and digital levels independently
  • Run a crew of one, directing an assistant and managing the day's work on site
  • Carry out cadastral fieldwork — monument search, recovery, and condition assessment
  • Interpret legal plans, field notes, and site drawings to locate and verify evidence
  • Apply the firm's operational procedures for all survey activities
  • Perform construction layout and verification, and topographic survey
  • Complete field computations and checks, and identify discrepancies before leaving site
  • Maintain field notes and documentation to the firm's QA/QC standard
  • Export, upload, and file field data following the end-of-day procedure
  • Coordinate with Party Chiefs, Project Managers, and CAD staff on project tasks
  • Care for, calibrate, and check assigned survey equipment
  • Support and mentor Assistant Survey Technicians on the crew

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • Diploma or certificate in geomatics, surveying technology, or a related discipline
  • Three or more years of field survey experience
  • Demonstrated independent operation of GNSS and robotic total stations
  • Ability to read and interpret legal survey plans and cadastral records
  • Understanding of survey evidence, monumentation, and the significance of a not-found search
  • Sound field computation and problem-solving ability
  • A valid B.C. driver's licence and a clean driving record
  • Physical ability to work outdoors, on foot, in all weather and on uneven ground

An asset:

  • Experience with MicroSurvey Infinity, Leica Captivate, AutoCAD, or Civil 3D
  • RPAS certification, or scanning and point-cloud experience
  • Progress toward LST or professional registration

WHAT WE OFFER

  • Overtime compensation — overtime hours are regularly available
  • Performance bonus program
  • Extended health and dental benefits
  • Extended office closure over Christmas and some major holidays
  • Field vehicles provided for travel to job sites
  • A defined advancement path to Senior Field Survey Technician and beyond
  • Support for continuing education, and for LST or professional registration if that is your goal

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent

Pay: $25.00-$38.00 per hour

Benefits:

  • Casual dress
  • Company car
  • Company events
  • Dental care
  • Disability insurance
  • Extended health care
  • Flexible schedule
  • Life insurance
  • On-site parking
  • Paid time off
  • Tuition reimbursement
  • Vision care

Ability to commute/relocate:

  • Delta, BC: reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (required)

Education:

Experience:

  • Survey: 2 years (required)

Language:

  • English (required)
