Pattern Maker – Evening Wear & Special Occasion
Location: North York, Toronto, Ontario
Company: LUCIAN MATIS
Position: Full-Time, Permanent
Work Location: In Person
Schedule: Monday–Friday
About LUCIAN MATIS
LUCIAN MATIS is a Toronto-based luxury fashion house known for sophisticated evening wear, special occasion dressing, and distinctive, highly crafted designs.
Our garments are defined by exceptional fit, refined construction, beautiful fabrics, and meticulous attention to detail. We are looking for an experienced Pattern Maker who shares our commitment to craftsmanship and has the technical expertise to transform creative concepts into beautifully engineered garments.
This is an important role within our design and production process. The successful candidate will work closely with our designer and atelier team to develop patterns for evening gowns, cocktail dresses, special occasion garments, and made-to-measure pieces.
The Role
As Pattern Maker, you will be responsible for translating design concepts, sketches, and fittings into precise, production-ready patterns.
You will need a highly developed understanding of women's garment construction, proportion, balance, fit, fabric behaviour, and the technical demands of evening wear. Experience working with complex silhouettes and luxury or special occasion garments is particularly valuable.
The ideal candidate is not simply someone who can draft a pattern, but a highly skilled technician who understands how to achieve the intended silhouette, fit, and finish of a designer garment.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop accurate patterns from designer sketches, samples, technical specifications, and verbal direction.
- Interpret design concepts and translate them into technically sound garment patterns.
- Create patterns for evening gowns, cocktail dresses, bridal and special occasion garments, and other sophisticated women's wear.
- Develop patterns for complex silhouettes, including fitted bodices, structured garments, draping, corsetry, asymmetrical designs, and intricate seam lines.
- Conduct fittings and make precise pattern adjustments based on fit, proportion, and design requirements.
- Alter and customize patterns according to individual client measurements for made-to-measure garments.
- Understand how different fabrics—including silks, satins, chiffons, crepes, lace, stretch fabrics, and other luxury materials—affect pattern development, fit, and construction.
- Collaborate closely with the designer, sample makers, and production team throughout the development process.
- Troubleshoot construction and fit issues and determine effective pattern solutions.
- Prepare accurate patterns and specifications for sampling and production.
- Grade patterns and make appropriate size adjustments where required.
- Maintain organized pattern files, blocks, measurements, and technical records.
- Review completed samples and refine patterns to ensure the final garment reflects the intended design and fit.
- Maintain a high standard of accuracy, consistency, and craftsmanship across all work.
- Keep current with evolving pattern-making techniques, technology, and industry practices.
Qualifications & Experience
Required:
- Minimum 10 years of professional pattern-making experience.
- Minimum 10 years of experience specifically with evening wear, special occasion, bridal, or similarly complex women's garments.
- Extensive experience creating patterns for dresses and gowns.
- Strong knowledge of women's garment construction, fit, balance, and proportion.
- Demonstrated experience altering patterns to individual client measurements.
- Strong understanding of fabric characteristics and how fabric behaviour affects pattern development and garment fit.
- Excellent technical accuracy and attention to detail.
- Ability to interpret designer sketches and translate creative ideas into technically accurate patterns.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to identify and correct fit and construction issues.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with a small, creative team.
- Experience with CAD or digital pattern-making systems is an asset.
- Formal education in fashion design, pattern making, garment technology, or a related field is an asset.
The Ideal Candidate
We are looking for someone with a true technical passion for pattern making and garment construction.
You should have an exceptional eye for fit and proportion, strong knowledge of women's evening wear, and the ability to work with precision under tight deadlines.
Experience in a luxury fashion house, bridal atelier, couture environment, or high-end special occasion studio would be highly valued.
You should be comfortable taking a design from an initial concept through pattern development, fitting, refinement, and final production.
Most importantly, you should take pride in the details. At LUCIAN MATIS, the difference between a good garment and an exceptional garment often comes down to fit, proportion, construction, and precision.
What We Offer
- Competitive compensation based on experience and technical expertise.
- The opportunity to work directly with a respected Canadian fashion brand.
- A creative, collaborative, and hands-on studio environment.
- The opportunity to work on sophisticated evening wear and special occasion garments.
- Exposure to complex garment construction, fittings, and made-to-measure work.
- Opportunities for professional growth and development.
- Access to modern pattern-making tools and technology.
- The opportunity to contribute directly to the development of distinctive luxury garments.

Please submit the following:
- Resume
- Portfolio showcasing relevant pattern-making and garment development work
- Brief cover letter outlining your experience with evening wear, special occasion, bridal, or made-to-measure garments
