Make a difference
We are searching for a dedicated and passionate individual to join our Health, Safety & Wellness team at Toronto Community Housing! As the Health and Safety Associate, you will use your expertise of health and safety management principles and best practices to support organizational compliance and provide guidance to divisional managers and supervisors concerning occupational health and safety ("OHS"). Reporting to the Manager of Health and Safety, you will work to implement and maintain health and safety programs and training. Your efforts will ensure that staff are engaged in physically and psychologically safe and healthy work supporting Toronto Community Housing's ambitious plan to improve the neighborhoods and lives of Toronto Community Housing tenants.
The Health & Safety Associate will be responsible for monitoring and supporting compliance with established policies and programs in a manner that aligns with TCHC's tenant focused culture. The successful candidate will work to promote staff participation and engagement in health and safety, providing due diligence to Toronto Community Housing for the protection of employees from injury and the protection of the organization from work stoppages, charges and fines.

What you’ll do
- Provide subject matter expertise to people managers, workers and union representatives on the application of established OHS policies and programs.
- Monitor, coordinate, and otherwise support divisional compliance with OHS program requirements in cooperation with senior unit staff.
- Support and promote staff engagement as part of Joint Health and Safety Committee meetings and inspections.
- Coordinate and attend monthly JHSC meetings, tracking action items and monitoring local committee membership and compliance.
- Track safety-related metrics and maintain databases and risk assessments.
- Assess divisional training needs and coordinate and facilitate safety-related training and respirator fit testing
- Act as emergency coordinator for corporate offices including lockdown and fire evacuation procedure maintenance and training.
- Develop staff communications and awareness campaigns
- Provide coverage to senior unit staff, participating in workplace inspections, audits, and investigations as assigned.
- 2 years of experience in human resources, occupational health and safety
- Post-secondary education in Occupational Health & Safety
- Demonstrated knowledge and ability to interpret relevant legislation, regulations, guidelines and standards including, but not limited to, the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, Employment Standards Act, Ontario Human Rights Code, Labour Relations Act, and Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act
- Technical knowledge of health and safety risks and requirements, including workplace violence, asbestos management, contractor safety, confined spaces, manual material handling, ergonomics, respiratory protection and WHMIS
- Working knowledge of computer applications including Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel
- Experience working within a unionized setting and interpreting collective agreement language related to OHS matters is an asset
- Expert communication and interpersonal skills to deal with all levels of staff, managers, bargaining agent representatives and external stakeholders
- Highly-developed analytical and problem-solving skills
