Family School Liaison Counsellor – 1.0 FTE - Probationary
North High School Campus


Located in Calgary, Foundations for the Future Charter Academy (FFCA) is the largest

public charter school in Alberta, serving over 4000 students in eight campuses

throughout the city. We offer educational programming through a distinctive Direct

Instruction Teaching and Learning Framework (DITLF) that has been refined and

developed within the Alberta context for students from Kindergarten to Grade 12. Our

mission is to provide a safe and caring environment where the four pillars of our charter,

namely academic excellence, character development, parental involvement and staff

leadership are valued and fostered.

Position Summary

A Family School Liaison Counsellor is required for a probationary position at the North

High School Campus beginning August 18, 2026.

The role of the Family School Liaison Counsellor is varied, ranging from general
support for the work of all students and staff members to particular contributions in
the areas of program development and campus activities. As well, the main focus
of the Counsellor position will be to work with students at risk in terms of their social
– emotional behavior, performance and readiness to learn.

Responsibilities

1. General Employee Expectations
a. Provides a high standard of professional performance
b. Serves as a positive role model and team member
c. Adheres to confidentiality and ethical guidelines
d. Attends work punctually and on a regular basis

2. Student Data Management
a. Establishes files for students at risk, as recommended by

administration, with regard to behavior, performance and learning
difficulties.

b. Maintaining anecdotal notes as a part of student files.
c. In consultation with administration, communicating regularly and as

needed with students, teachers, parents and other agencies concerned
with students at risk.

d. Making recommendations to teachers, parents and administration
regarding the needs of students in this category.

e. Establishing protocols, in consultation with administration, regarding
procedures for meeting the needs of students at risk.

f. Assessing resources and resource people to support work with
students at risk, and acting as liaison with resource people such as
direct by administration.

3. Student Program Support
a. Working within the school support team to develop and implement

strategies to support students at risk in the areas of behavioral change,
self-concept improvement, and social skill development.

b. Support students at risk in the areas of behavioral change, self-
concept improvement, and social skill development.

c. Ensuring feedback and follow-up of implemented student support plan
are relayed to team members.

d. Working with the school support team to integrate the Character
Education and/or Leadership programs distinctive of FFCA into work
with students at risk.

e. Seeking opportunities to engage all students in activities related to
career planning.

f. Providing an appropriate level of support for the educational
counseling required by students.

4. Professional Responsibilities
a. A key member within the school support team that may consist of:

School Administration; Learning Support Teacher; teaching staff;
families.

b. Communicate early and often with campus staff regarding menu of
possibilities for Counsellor support.

c. Member of the FFCA Emergency Team and School Emergency
Response Team.

d. Work in conjunction with other FFCA Counselors to ensure program
coordination K-12, appropriate testing of students at risk and an
exchange of services and information where required.


5. Other related duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Degree in Child and Youth Care Counselling/Social Work/Psychology or related
field required
  • Certification with Child and Youth Care Association of Alberta required
  • Work experience within a school environment preferred
  • The ability to work independently and take initiative
  • Strong interpersonal skills with students, parents and staff
  • Ability to see the potential of each student and believe that positive change is
possible
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Proficiency with currently technology for performance of duties
