Bilingual Kindergarten Teacher

École St. Joseph School

Start Date: August 2026

Yellowknife Catholic Schools is seeking a passionate educator to deliver engaging, age-appropriate instruction in French for students in Kindergarten. The successful candidate will foster social, emotional, and academic growth by building foundational skills in literacy and French language acquisition while encouraging curiosity, creativity, and cultural awareness. In this role, you will maintain a safe, welcoming, and inclusive classroom environment, collaborate closely with families and colleagues to ensure student success, and integrate faith-based values alongside Indigenous Language and Culture perspectives into daily learning.

For over 65 years, Yellowknife Catholic Schools has provided quality, faith-based public education in the Northwest Territories, welcoming students of all backgrounds from JK through Grade 12. Serving approximately 1,500 students across three schools and a technical center, our district is committed to holistic student development, focusing on academic growth, spiritual integrity, and reconciliation through the Dene Kede curriculum and on-the-land learning.

Located on Chief Drygeese Territory in the Akaitcho region (traditional lands of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation), Yellowknife offers exceptional year-round outdoor adventure from midnight-sun fishing and paddling to ski trails and aurora viewing alongside vibrant arts, fitness facilities, and competitive recreational sports leagues.

Required Education and Recommended Knowledge, Qualifications and Experience

● Must hold, or be eligible for a(n) NWT Teaching Certificate

● Must be bilingual (French/English)

● Bachelor of Education Degree (specialization in French Immersion preferred)

● Experience in early childhood behavior management

● Certification in First Aid and Infant CPR

● Preference will be given to those with experience teaching French Immersion

● Preference will be given to those with experience/education in numeracy, literacy and teaching French as a second language

● Knowledge of and experience in the effective use of technology in the classroom

● Knowledge of social, community and other challenges experienced by children and families

● Knowledge of how to access community services and resources

● Knowledge of program administration

● Experience teaching in northern communities and an understanding of Indigenous culture, an asset

● A vulnerable sector check is a requirement

Required Skills and Abilities

● Demonstrated ability to work as part of an effective school team

● Must work as a team member in planning, delivery and assessment of programs and students

● Understand how to integrate spirituality and faith into teaching practices

● Organizational skills, initiative and a strong team focus are required
