Job Summary
The Biomedical Visualization and Communication Designer will support the development and enhancement of patient education materials within the cardiac program at BC children’s hospital.
The successful candidate will work at the intersection of design, healthcare communication, and patient education, contributing to meaningful resources that support patients and families in understanding complex health information.
A key focus of this role includes maintaining and evolving an existing digital platform (Heart Hub app), as well as identifying gaps in patient education and developing new materials to address them

This position will be in-person based at BC Children’s Hospital, 4480 Oak Street, Vancouver.
Work Performed
Update and maintain digital patient education content, including the Heart Hub app (e.g., revising visuals, integrating new information, ensuring visual consistency)
Refresh and redesign existing patient education materials to improve clarity, accessibility, and visual engagement
Collaborate with a Clinical Nurse Specialist and interdisciplinary team to:
- Identify gaps in patient education resources
- Translate clinical insights into design opportunities

Apply human-centered design approaches, including:

- Iterative feedback cycles with clinical stakeholders
- Incorporation of user (patient/family) perspectives where appropriate
Ensure all materials align with best practices in accessibility, health literacy, and inclusive design
Communicate design decisions clearly to both clinical and non-design stakeholders
Consequence of Error/Judgement
In the event of an error or concerns about judgement, the supervisor will provide feedback as close to real-time as possible. This will occur in alignment with the existing policies and principles of UBC. Opportunities for learning and self-assessment will be provided as appropriate. In the event of repetitive concerns of judgement or errors which have been previously raised, additional meetings and escalation may occur.
Supervision Received
The designer will work quite autonomously on the product with regular touch points with the supervisor and clinical nurse specialist. At any time, the designer can request additional feedback verbally, via email or requesting a meeting.
