Full job description

Product Development Engineer

Build Better Products. Solve Real Problems.

Sideshift designs and manufactures innovative marine thruster systems that help boaters dock with confidence. As we continue to grow, we're investing in our products, engineering capabilities, and manufacturing systems—and we're looking for a hands-on Product Development Engineer to help shape what's next.

This isn't a desk-only engineering role. You'll spend time designing in CAD, but you'll also be on the shop floor, testing prototypes, solving production challenges, working with suppliers, and helping bring new products to market.

If you enjoy building, improving, and figuring out how things work, you'll fit right in.

What You'll Do

Working closely with our Head of Engineering and Operations, you'll:

  • Improve existing products while supporting new product development
  • Design mechanical components and assemblies using SolidWorks
  • Create engineering drawings, BOMs, and technical documentation
  • Develop and execute product testing and validation plans
  • Analyze performance data and recommend design improvements
  • Support manufacturing by troubleshooting production issues and improving quality
  • Work with suppliers on component selection, qualification, and technical requirements
  • Help strengthen engineering documentation, revision control, and product development processes
  • Mentor engineering co-op students and collaborate across production, purchasing, quality, and leadership

What We're Looking For

We're looking for an engineer who combines strong technical skills with a practical, hands-on mindset.

Qualifications

  • Degree or diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Manufacturing Engineering, or related discipline
  • 7+ years of experience in product development, mechanical design, manufacturing, testing, or similar roles
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills
  • Experience with physical products and manufacturing environments
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred)
  • Experience creating engineering drawings and technical documentation
  • Comfortable working in a growing company where priorities evolve

Experience that's an asset

  • Marine, propulsion, electric motors, actuators, or electromechanical products
  • Product testing and validation
  • Supplier development and manufacturing quality
  • Engineering change control, BOM management, or ERP systems
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers or co-op students
  • Eligibility for P.Eng registration in Ontario

You'll Thrive Here If You...

  • Enjoy solving real engineering problems
  • Like spending time both in CAD and on the shop floor
  • Take ownership and see projects through
  • Prefer variety over a highly specialized corporate role
  • Enjoy collaborating with people who value practical solutions

Why Join Sideshift?

  • Play a key role in developing products used around the world
  • Work directly with company leadership
  • Enjoy broad exposure across design, testing, manufacturing, suppliers, and product strategy
  • Join a growing Canadian manufacturer where your work has visible impact
  • Be part of a collaborative team that moves quickly and values great ideas

Apply Today

If you're excited about designing better products, solving practical engineering challenges, and helping shape the future of a growing company, we'd love to hear from you.

Please submit your resume along with a brief note highlighting your experience in product development, mechanical design, manufacturing, testing, or related engineering work.

Please note - the role is located in Carleton Place, ON

Pay: $90,000.00-$100,000.00 per year

Benefits:

  • Extended health care
  • On-site parking

Experience:

  • Engineering: 7 years (preferred)

Work Location: Hybrid remote in Kanata, ON K2M 2V8
