Peerless Trout First Nation (PTFN) is a Woods Cree (Sakhaw Nehiyawak) Nation located in northern Alberta, approximately 70 kilometres northeast of Red Earth. Established as an independent Nation in 2010 through a Land Claim settlement, PTFN governs approximately 63,000 acres of reserve land and is home to over 800 members residing primarily in the communities of Peerless Lake and Trout Lake. Guided by an elected Chief and Council, the Nation is deeply rooted in Cree language, culture, and traditions, and is committed to building a strong, safe, and sustainable future for its people.

Are you passionate about keeping communities safe and building trust? Peerless Trout First Nation (PTFN) is looking for a Community Peace Officer (CPO) to enhance safety, enforce traffic and provincial statutes, and foster community well-being through education and engagement.

The Community Peace Officer (Level 1) promotes safety and harmony within the community through proactive patrols, enforcement of applicable legislation and Nation Bylaws, and public education. Working collaboratively with the RCMP, emergency responders, and community partners, the CPO demonstrates professionalism, integrity, and cultural awareness while building positive, trusting relationships.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Conduct proactive patrols within the authorized jurisdiction to enforce provincial statutes and Nation Bylaws.
• Promote community safety through education, awareness campaigns, and engagement on traffic and public safety laws.
• Build positive relationships with community members while respecting and reflecting Indigenous traditions, values, and cultural protocols.
• Respond to and investigate complaints; gather evidence, prepare detailed reports, and provide testimony in court when required.
• Collaborate effectively with the RCMP, emergency services, and other enforcement or community agencies to support public safety initiatives.
• Maintain accurate records, documentation, and data entry in approved reporting systems in a timely manner.
• Demonstrate professionalism, integrity, and impartiality in all interactions, upholding the values and reputation of the Peerless Trout First Nation.
• Complete mandatory in-service and professional development training as required by provincial standards.
• Ensure all issued uniforms, equipment, vehicles, and use-of-force tools are maintained, secured, and operated to the highest safety standards.
• Participate in community events and initiatives to promote safety awareness and strengthen relationships with residents.
• Carries out assigned enforcement and compliance duties under the Alberta Peace Officer Act, Peace Officer Regulation and applicable Nation Bylaws, in compliance with the provincial Peace Officer Policy Manual and within the authority granted by their Peace Officer Appointment.
• Exercises discretion and judgment when resolving enforcement matters, prioritizing education, safety, and community engagement.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Meets all appointment requirements, including the ability to pass the PARE fitness test and successfully complete the Community Peace Officer Induction Program (CPOIP) with all associated certifications.
• Knowledge of the Alberta Peace Officer Act, Peace Officer Regulation, Ministerial Peace Officer Regulation, the Provincial Peace Officer Policy Manual, and applicable Nation Bylaws and related statutes.
• Understanding of Indigenous governance, traditions, and community values, and how they relate to fair and respectful enforcement practices.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, including accurate report writing, record keeping, and clear documentation using computers and electronic systems.
• Proven ability to de-escalate conflict, resolve issues calmly, and make sound decisions under pressure while maintaining professionalism, integrity, and impartiality.
• Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to engage respectfully and effectively with community members, leadership, and enforcement partners such as RCMP and emergency responders.
• Physically fit and capable of performing patrols, responding to incidents, and working in varied and sometimes challenging outdoor conditions.
• Able to work independently with minimal supervision while demonstrating accountability, sound judgment, and adherence to policy and procedure.
• Demonstrates cultural awareness, respect, and a strong commitment to community engagement, education, and safety.
• Dedicated to continuous learning, professional development, and upholding both provincial and community standards.
• Must be able to provide a clear and current RCMP criminal records check as well as a valid Class 5 Drivers License and a current Drivers Abstract.
