Job Description:

The role assists all clients at The Salvation Army Halifax Centre of Hope by ensuring a safe, clean, dignified, and welcoming environment. Responsibilities include client intake, monitoring, advocacy, documentation, and maintaining building security. Staff work as part of a team, collaborating with Residential Support Workers (RSW) and Housing Support Workers (HSW) while advancing the Centre’s mission and vision, providing practical, emotional, and spiritual life‑skills guidance to residents.

Key Responsibilities

Client Support

  • Welcome and orient new clients; complete all intake and discharge documentation.

  • Monitor client activities and provide support, guidance, and life‑skills coaching.

  • Advocate for clients and liaise with external agencies (e.g., DCS, police, parole).

  • Assist with income assistance applications, medical needs, documentation, and referrals.

  • Administer and record medication exchanges according to policy.

  • Support addictions and recovery program coordination as required .

Safety & Securit y

  • Maintain building safety through security checks, camera system monitoring, and adherence to emergency/fire procedures.

  • Conduct room checks, bed checks, searches, and enforce Centre rules.

Administration

  • Maintain accurate logs, journals, statistics, and client files.

  • Use data and assessment tools ( HiFIS < VISPDAT, BND etc )

  • Keep the intake area clean and organized.

Facility & Client Care

  • Distribute clothing, personal care items, mail , and medications .

  • Lock and clear dorms as scheduled.

  • Support general cleaning of common areas when needed.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong communication , interpersonal, and organizational skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Knowledge of homelessness, mental health, addictions, crisis intervention, and community resources.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and basic computer use.

  • Ability to build healthy rapport and maintain confidentiality.

Education & Experience

  • 1–2‑year certificate in Social/Human Services (or equivalent experience).

  • 1–3 years working with at‑risk or homeless populations preferred.

  • Certifications (or willingness to obtain within 6 months):

  • NVCI

  • ASIST

  • Standard First Aid

  • COH Medication Training

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Schedule may vary according to requirements of responsibilities – some weekend and evening work may be required.

  • The Number of hours worked is determined by your letter of employment.

  • Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion.

    This is for a temporary Full-time position.

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $18.30 to $22.87 with a maximum of $27.44.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
