Hope Mission is a Christian non-profit social care agency that has been serving vulnerable people in Alberta since 1929. We are one of Alberta’s largest social service agencies and currently operate emergency shelters, addiction recovery programs, youth programs, community outreach services, housing programs, and health programs (delivered through our HopeHealth division) across Edmonton, Red Deer, Wetaskiwin, and beyond. Our work is grounded in our Christian faith and our commitment to walking alongside individuals experiencing homelessness, poverty, and addiction. Program Description – Hope Health

Hope Health delivers a variety of health services to clients utilizing Hope Mission’s shelter services. Hope Health’s nurse-led clinics provide accessible frontline healthcare support for individuals experiencing homelessness, addiction, mental health challenges, and housing instability. The clinics offer low-barrier health assessments, nursing care, wound care, medication support, referrals, and connections to broader community and recovery services, helping clients address urgent health needs while building stability and trust.

Position Summary

The Emergency Medical Responder or Medical First Responder (EMR/MFR) is responsible for responding to medical emergencies and providing urgent medical care throughout downtown Edmonton. This position serves vulnerable individuals experiencing homelessness, addiction, mental health challenges, and complex medical needs while supporting Hope Mission’s commitment to compassionate care and community safety. You will work closely with outreach teams, shelters, healthcare providers, and emergency services to assess, treat, and coordinate care for clients in crisis. The role includes frontline emergency response, patient advocacy, and collaboration within a multidisciplinary team operating in high-acuity and fast-paced environments. You would work alongside two Primary Care Paramedics and a health advocate.

Key Responsibilities

Program / Direct Service Responsibilities

  • Attend and respond to medical emergencies within the shelter and surrounding property.
  • Respond to high-acuity or emergent wellness checks.
  • Provide high-quality care within your full scope of practice, following AHS EMS protocols or Hope Mission established protocols.
  • Make timely transport decisions (within 15 minutes of patient contact) and coordinate with emergency agencies.
  • Deliver trauma-informed de-escalation and provide emotional and spiritual support during crises.
  • Contribute to staff education (e.g., Naloxone training), policy/procedure development, and spiritual care activities.
  • Provide feedback on emergency response policies and engage in quality improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the recovery coach to assist in referrals for frequent clients.
  • Ensure orientation and onboarding of new staff, modeling accountability and care in all interactions.
  • Uphold and live out the Statement of Faith.

Operational & Facilities Responsibilities

  • Maintain emergency supply readiness, restock kits, and ensure secure clinical spaces.

Administration & Reporting

  • Complete documentation, including charting, referrals, and scanning/uploading records.

Communication & Collaboration

  • Communicate with clarity, professionalism, and respect with staff, guests, and community stakeholders.
  • Participate in team meetings, organizational events, and training as required.

Qualifications

Education & Credentials

  • Completion of an accredited Emergency Medical Responder or Medical First Responder program.
  • Current licensure with the Alberta College of Paramedics (EMRs).
  • Current individual professional liability insurance (as per ACP license; EMRs only).
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Sign and adhere to the Hope Mission Statement of Faith.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong communication skills when dealing with Hope Mission staff and interagency partners.
  • Knowledge of EMR/MFR skills and scope of practice.
  • Effective time management and the ability to prioritize in a fast-paced environment.

Working Conditions

  • Casual position; shifts are picked up through the scheduling software on an as-needed basis.
  • Day shifts are 0500–1700; night shifts are 1700–0500.
  • Must adhere to the casual requirements policy.
  • Work takes place in a shelter or social services environment; exposure to complex client needs and situations is expected.

Other Requirements

  • As a Christian organization, Hope Mission requires employees to sign the Hope Mission Statement of Faith.
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada on a full-time basis.
  • Adherence to Hope Mission’s policies and procedures.
