Oromocto First Nation Child and Family Services (OCFS) is a designated child and family services agency dedicated to serving the children and families of Oromocto First Nation. Grounded in community, culture, and collaboration, OCFS works to keep children safe, strengthen families, and ensure children remain connected to their identity, traditions, and support systems.

Unlike larger agencies, OCFS serves a single community, allowing for smaller caseloads and a more personalized approach to care. Team members work closely together, creating an environment where social workers can devote meaningful time and attention to each child and family while receiving strong organizational support.

Reporting to the Director of OCFS, the Social Worker will play a critical role in promoting the safety, wellbeing, and long-term success of children and families within the community. This is a full-time, on-site opportunity based in Oromocto First Nation, New Brunswick, with local travel required and participation in a rotating after-hours on-call schedule.

What you’ll be doing

• Conduct child protection investigations, risk assessments, and safety assessments to support the wellbeing of children and families.
• Develop and manage case plans focused on family preservation, reunification, and kinship or community-based care.
• Support families navigating complex challenges, including trauma, addiction, mental health concerns, family violence, and poverty.
• Build strong relationships with children, families, Elders, Band representatives, schools, healthcare providers, and community partners.
• Coordinate services and supports to ensure children receive the care they need while remaining connected to their community and culture.
• Maintain accurate and detailed case records that meet legal standards.
• Prepare affidavits, court documentation, and provide evidence during court proceedings when required.
• Exercise sound professional judgment while making difficult decisions in high-pressure and emotionally complex situations.
• Participate in a collaborative, team-based environment that prioritizes quality care and meaningful outcomes for families.

What we are looking for

• Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) required; Master of Social Work (MSW) considered an asset.
• Registration in good standing with the New Brunswick Association of Social Workers (NBASW), or eligibility to register.
• Minimum one year of demonstrated experience in child protection or child welfare.
• Strong assessment, safety planning, case management, and crisis intervention skills.
• Excellent professional judgment and decision-making abilities.
• Strong written communication skills, including the ability to prepare legal documentation and provide evidence in court.
• Familiarity with the Child and Youth Well-Being Act and An Act Respecting First Nations, Inuit and Métis Children, Youth and Families (Bill C-92).
• Knowledge of Wolastoqey history, culture, and community, and experience working within First Nations communities, is considered a strong asset.
• Valid New Brunswick driver’s licence and reliable transportation.
• Ability to obtain a clear criminal record check, including vulnerable sector screening, and a Social Development child welfare record check.
