JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Title: Food Safety Coordinator

Replacement or New Role: New

Reporting to the Quality Assurance Manager, this role is responsible for maintaining and improving the plants Food Safety systems (HACCP and BRC) to ensure compliance to regulatory, customer and third-party audit requirements. This role will actively participate in all internal and external auditing activities and follow-up which requires considerable technical and scientific knowledge in a dynamic and challenging food processing environment. This position will play a key supporting role to the QA Manager in Quality Assurance activities.


JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Abides by all regulatory and corporate Health & Safety and GMP policies
  • Oversees the implementation and maintenance of the food safety and quality systems
  • Execute on HACCP/BRC programs and SOP’s according to changes in CFIA regulations, or new production processes
  • Lead HACCP/BRC team and participate in projects and meetings with the goal of improving food safety and quality
  • Completes a reassessment of the HACCP system annually
  • Verifies that the HACCP system is effectively documented and implemented and perform certifications
  • Ensure compliance to regulatory, GFSI and customer requirements (HACCP, SFCR, BRC)
  • Set standards and monitor procedures to ensure food safety
  • Provide technical expertise to Operations
  • Train new employees on good manufacturing practices, HACCP/BRC procedures and company policies in Food Plant Hygiene including annual refresher training
  • Responsible for updating and reviewing HACCP/BRC records, acting on records showing deficiencies or recurring issues and communicate findings to the management team
  • Accountable for preparation and participation in all third-party audits/CFIA (Canadian Food Inspection Agency). Maintain professional collaborative interaction with all third-party auditors /CFIA and production
  • Assist in follow up corrective actions and preventative measures from audit findings
  • Recommend and implement approved improvements to production processes, etc. that increase food safety
  • Accountable to participate in QA projects such as new product launch, etc. with a goal of improved compliance and operational efficiency
  • Verifies the effectiveness of the recall and traceability program and assist in investigation of customer complaints
  • Ensure that the facility and equipment meet the sanitation standards by implementing sanitation protocols and ensure proper record keeping and regular follow up
  • Maintain an open line of communication with both plant management and key production employees in order to properly emphasize the critical nature of daily product and process cleanliness and insistence on the maintenance of established practices and procedures that in any way relate to product quality.
  • Assist with the development of an on-site quality control manual for plant management and play an active part in the training of supervision, local quality control personnel as well as employees generally
  • Monitor various products on a regular basis ensuring adherence to corporate quality standards and specification
  • Ensure that changes in product specification and programs/standards are clearly communicated and implemented
  • Actively participate in any product recalls or withdrawals
  • Other duties as assigned by the Quality Assurance Manager

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completed post-secondary education in Food Science, Microbiology or related discipline
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in the food industry
  • Trained in, with working knowledge of, HACCP, BRC, GMP, SFCR, GFSI, Food Safety and Quality Systems
  • Knowledge of Six Sigma or lean processing would be an asset
  • Working knowledge of MS Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook etc.) and the ability to adapt to other software applications.
  • Manages time effectively meeting goals and working effectively with other teams
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to write procedures, work instructions and complete reports
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong decision making, analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills with demonstrated multi-tasking and project management skills
