Full job description

NEC respects the ancestral and unceded territory of the xʷməθkwəyəm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səlílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. NEC is dedicated to the Peoples of these territories and beyond. We are centering our Nations, one learner at a time. In doing this work collectively, we demonstrate that commitment is more than just showing up.

NEC is committed to protecting and upholding the dignity, safety, and identities of our Indigenous learners. We honor traditional values and Indigenous knowledge, fostering learners’ identities, aspirations, and sense of belonging. Our academic programming and wrap-around supports are aligned with the Longhouse Values of the Host Nations.

Position Summary:
In service to Indigenous peoples, and leading with Indigenous values, principles, and philosophies, the instructor delivers high quality, culturally relevant, trauma-informed instruction within their program. This role builds safe, engaging learning environments where Indigenous learners succeed: through classroom facilitation, hands-on and land-based learning, and teaching grounded in Indigenous approaches and the Longhouse Values.

Working with the Program Coordinator or Program Manager, Student Services, and the wider NEC community, the instructor teaches, supports learners, keeps academic records true, and contributes to the program's continuous life. This work is carried out in the spirit of getting in the canoe and paddling together, knowing where we come from and where we are going

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline, or a suitable combination of education, lived experience, and specialized training.
  • Minimum 1–2 years of teaching experience in an adult or post-secondary education setting.
  • Experience working with Indigenous students, communities, Elders, and Knowledge Keepers.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Indigenous cultures, pedagogies, cultural safety, and trauma-informed practice.
  • Strong classroom management, facilitation, and lesson delivery skills.
  • Ability to assess learner needs and adapt instructional content accordingly.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Familiarity with adult learning theories and inclusive, culturally responsive education practices.
  • Cultural humility and ability to engage respectfully with diverse learners.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and collaborative platforms (Moodle, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams).
  • Demonstrated cultural competency and understanding of the Longhouse Values of the Host Nations
  • Ability to pass a criminal record check

Terms:

Appointment may require a criminal record check; results may affect final offer of employment.

Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required for programming or events.

NEC welcomes applications from all qualified candidates; preference given to qualified Indigenous applicants
