Specialized Child Caregiver / Behavioural Support Worker

Compensation: $39 / hour

Additional Hours: Occasional overtime hours as needed

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced, compassionate, and highly capable full-time caregiver to provide one-on-one support for our 8-year-old son with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ADHD, and learning disabilities in reading, writing and math. Our child attends school, therapy appointments, educational programming, and community activities. The caregiver will provide support across these environments as required.

This is a hands-on role for someone who is passionate about supporting neurodiverse children and helping them thrive socially, emotionally, physically, and academically. Our son has significant behavioural, motor, learning, and social challenges and requires consistent support throughout his daily activities and routines. Additionally, our son is a large, heavy build (approx 120 lbs and growing) who requires someone able to safely assist him in moments of physical escalation, as well as gross motor and sports development, such as beginner swimming, biking, and other recreational activities.

For this role we are ideally also seeking a fluent Spanish speaker who can continue to foster the learning and development of Spanish-language education in our son, whose birth family and heritage is Salvadoran. The ideal caregiver will be asked to speak Spanish to our son on a regular and daily basis, and encourage his use of Spanish in response, including correcting grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation.

The successful candidate will become an integral member of our family team, providing structured support, helping develop life skills, facilitating participation in activities, and ensuring his safety and well-being at all times.

Key Responsibilities

Child Care & Daily Living Support

• Provide attentive, individualized care before and after school
• Support personal care needs, including dressing, hygiene, toileting, and other activities of daily living
• Assist with transitions, routines, and daily structure
• Prepare healthy meals and snacks for our child
• Accompany our child to appointments, therapies, extracurricular activities, and community outings

Behavioural & Emotional Support

• Implement consistent behavioural support strategies
• Help manage emotional dysregulation, anxiety, frustration, and behavioural outbursts
• Support the development of social skills, communication skills, and emotional regulation
• Maintain a calm, patient, and positive approach during challenging situations
• Collaborate with parents and professionals to ensure consistency of care and support strategies

Educational & Developmental Support

• Assist with learning activities, homework, and academic skill development
• Support the development of independence and life skills
• Reinforce educational and therapeutic goals established by parents, teachers, and specialists
• Foster confidence, resilience, and positive self-esteem

Physical Activity & Recreation Support

• Participate actively alongside our child in recreational and physical activities
• Provide direct support during sports, biking, swimming lessons, camps, and extracurricular programs
• Assist with the development of physical skills, including:
• Swimming
• Bicycle riding
• Team and individual sports
• General coordination and motor skill development
• Act as an on-site aide and support person during activities and community outings

Transportation & Household Support

• Drive our child to and from school, appointments, therapies, and activities using a family-provided vehicle
• Grocery shop and purchase child-related items such as clothing, shoes, books, supplies, and activity materials
• Maintain organization of child-related belongings, clothes, books, educational materials, activity equipment, and other supplies
• Communicate regularly with parents regarding schedules, progress, concerns, and successes

Qualifications

Required

• Completion of post-secondary coursework in one of the following: Early Childhood Education (ECE), Special Education, Behavioural Intervention, or Child and Youth Care
• Fluency in English
• Valid BC Class 5 Driver's License
• Current First Aid and CPR certification
• Comfortable driving throughout Metro Vancouver
• Ability to safely provide physical support to a child weighing approximately 120 lbs. (and growing), including assisting during behavioural escalations and supporting the child’s safety in community, recreational, educational, and home environments
• Minimum 6 months ofexperience working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ADHD, and other neurodevelopmental differences
• Practical and demonstrated experience with behavioural support, emotional regulation strategies, and neurodiversity-affirming practices
• Ability to engage playfully with children while balancing discipline and learning across academics, social development, and physical development
• Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills
• Demonstrated ability to remain calm, patient, and supportive during behavioural crises or emotional escalations
• Experience working with children who have significant behavioural, learning, motor, and social challenges
• No criminal record, verified by a formal criminal record check

Preferred

• Fluency in Spanish
• Experience supporting children in community, recreational, or educational settings
• Strong interest in sports – specifically soccer, biking, swimming

This role requires someone who can build a trusting relationship with our child while helping him navigate daily challenges, develop independence, and experience success in his home, school, and community environments.
